Sanctions just hurt the poor and give the ruling regime being sanctioned a scapegoat for all the ills of their country. Sanctions would ultimately help Iran's regime, and will probably chip away at the diplomacy movement in the country. After all, people in Iran will see the US and its allies as the greater of two evils for the pain sanctions will bring them because from their perspective, they likely feel that Iran has as much a right to nuclear technology as Israel or the US, who likely appear quite hypocritical from their point of view.

But that matters very little because I very much doubt there's any stopping the US from attacking Iran at some point.
