I was born in Socialistic Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the country that no longer exist. I almost graduated from High School when a war broke out in early 1990's and tore the country to pieces. Having survived years of bombings and a concentration camp, my family was forcefully relocated from Bosnia to another country to sit out the difficult times in refugee camps.

Couple of hopeless years went by. Then, it was by a miracle that an American doctor working in a humanitarian organization visiting our camp pledged to help my family. Things developed quickly and so a year later, in Summer of 1996, I was on my way to Honolulu, Hawaii, determined to get a college education and help my country, or whatever may have become of it.

I graduated from Hawaii Pacific University in 2002 with BS in Computer Science and MS in Information Systems in 2005. For nine years I studied subjects like cultures, languages, communication, American history, international relations, computer science, and other. In order to learn about the world, I soaked in as much knowledge and different perspectives as I could about everything and anything, watching American television (PBS, Discovery, History channel, National Geographic, A&E, C-SPAN, and even comedians such as Jerry Springer, Bill O'Reilly, and alike :) etc)

It was during those important years of my life that a certain character started to emerge within me. My socialistic upbringing and indoctrination started to fade and I became receptive of criticism of socialism. However I could never connect the dots and realize who or what I was turning into.

Furthermore, at the time of my second graduation I realized that my views of the world are completely incompatible with what's going on in the world. Have you ever thought you are a weirdo because no one could agree with you on something? That something is wrong with your thinking? Self evaluation and criticism… Trying to fit in… Not being able to find my purpose I felt apathetic. The day of leaving the United States was nearing, yet I didn’t have a clue on how help my country. I was left with more questions than answers. After my graduation I became a Ronin - a masterless samurai, spending countless nights researching everything I came across in search of answers. I even sacrificed my career and decided not to work until I find out who I really am and why I’m not like everyone around me.

Pressure and questioning from family soon followed, making me even more isolated. They wanted me to become a success and their hope for the future by seeing me have a good job. However, I disregarded their dreams and desperately searched for a way of fulfilling my dream of making a positive difference in the world, it's all that mattered.

It was in May of 2007 that the sun rays finally broke through the clouds and my life was changed again for the good. It happened while watching the first primary republican debate on YouTube. A month earlier I had read a book on “Leadership” written by Rudy Giuliani and thought it would be interesting to see what his views of the world were. Though I found his book useful and informative, I strongly disagreed with the way he dealt with Yasser Arafat and the Saudi prince. Still I thought that a man of his experience deserved to be heard. Giuliani was the only candidate known to me, I’ve never heard of the other men. Debate was well under way and then came the critical moment which put me to tears. A certain candidate was responding to question of “why are his fellow republicans wrong for not voting against the Iraq war as he did.” It was music to my ears. I instantaneously got hooked, googled Ron Paul, and the rest is history. Here’s a nice summary of the most important parts of that debate, watch and weep:

It took me a long time to find out who I really am and what I really stand for. It was thanks to Dr. Ron Paul that my almost incurable apathy was healed. I feel like a man who’s got purpose again and know the direction in which I’m heading. I finally have an idea of how to help the people of my country too.

Update: After two and a half years of research I finally decided to make my own stand for liberty. Here it is: http://www.slobodaiprosperitet.tv/en

As a foreigner I already feel alienated in this website since I cannot be a paid member, and since I may not have the bucks nor own the evil of all evils (read: "credit card") I simply cannot sign up to become a VIP.  Freedom should not be up for sales nor just for privileged, I hope to see things changed here quickly, otherwise I'm just unnecessarily wasting hours of my time trying mo make some meaningful contribution and learn from others.

For Liberty, everywhere and for everyone!

I assume you could mail in some money. I know a lot of the info here is free. But I'm on Okinawa and it took a while to get my C4L membership back after the website changed.
I will probably snail mail my membership check in eventually. In the mean time, I'd like to get more of the SOFA status members and potential members around Japan involved on this site and also reach out to the Japanese people, who are so economically inclined and would benefit from the Austian economic viewpoint. I'm still looking for info on that in Japanese.
You do not have to be a dues-paying member here to go to the Education site and read. I'm working on Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" right now. I've never been interested in economics before this, and I've got lots of catching up to do. Whenever grassroots libertarians get the go-ahead, all kinds of creativity happens. So I have great hopes for this website.

Linda, Hajimemashite! Doozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu! :)

I agree that there's alot of free info here, however I still believe that all registered (paid and unpaid) users should be able to contribute new topics and alike. I don't believe that I'm any smarter or more entitled to a contribution if I pay, am I? I just think that payment barrier is nothing but a barrier to ideas and communication. Financial contribution I will give anyway, when I'm capable of it.

Master of my Liberty, I am! :)

Hi there! I'm not a paid member either (yet). I'm not sure, but the paid membership option may be related to the organization being classified as an "IRC Sec. 501(C)(4)" organization. Basically, this relates to whether the United States government considers the Campaign for Liberty to be a non-profit organization for the purposes of federal income tax exemptions. Our U.S. tax code is ridiculously long and complex, as you probably are aware. One of the requirements for this special tax status appears to be that the organization must limit its membership by some method. I am not certain that this is why they have a paid membership option, but it is my best guess as to the reason. The Campaign for Liberty staff should be able to give the actual reason for having a type of paid membership. You can contact them via the Help button on the top of the website. If you end up contacting them, please let me know what they said. I'm curious. :)

Things will not change quickly. We were not hijacked by the pirates overnite! It will take time if blood shed is to be resisted. The C4L is about getting involved in government instead of letting someone else do the governing. If you have knowledge you have an obligation. Arm chair patriots will not win. You seem very smart. Glad to see so many foriegners getting involved!Ron Paul was the reason i sat in a computer chair for the first time at 32, but Edward Griffin has gotten me out of the chair and motivated in C4L.

Hey, I loved reading your story. Don't give up on the site just yet. It's only a few months old. You're not missing out much as a non-paying member anyways. The most important thing to do is to educate yourself and educate others. It's that simple. The nice thing about this site is the ability to network with other like-minded people, especially in your area. Consider putting up a new blog one of these days letting us know what you are up to. For example, are you living in Hong Kong, or Hawaii? What books are you currently reading, if any?
