This bill is intended to pre-emptively reduce taxes on brewers before legislators have a chance to raise taxes on them to pay for the Obama administration's spendy goals (i.e. national healthcare).
The so-called BEER Act would amend the Internal Revenue Code to:
- reduce from $18 to $9 ( the pre-1991 level) the per-barrel tax on beer
- allow a further reduction in such tax for brewers who produce not more than 2 million barrels annually
With 70 breweries in 2008, Michigan is the 6th largest brewing state in the Union (2008 data):

Our representatives should be all over this bill!!
Fortunately, we have seven of our 15 legislators joining 175 other co-sponsors (total 182 as of this writing), but where are the other eight? A list of Michigan co-sponsors as of this writing is shown below (those not yet signed on listed with a "?"):
Rep Stupak, Bart [MI-1] - 4/2/2009 Rep Hoekstra, Peter [MI-2] - 2/26/2009 MI-3? MI-4? Rep Kildee, Dale E. [MI-5] - 3/5/2009 Rep Upton, Fred [MI-6] - 3/5/2009 MI-7? Rep Rogers, Mike J. [MI-8] - 3/12/2009 MI-9? Rep Miller, Candice S. [MI-10] - 4/23/2009 Rep McCotter, Thaddeus G. [MI-11] - 4/30/2009 MI-12? MI-13? MI-14? MI-15?
If your representative is not listed above, PLEASE write to them and urge them to support this bill!
A related bill, S.1058, was just introduced in the senate, which as of now only has six co-sponsors. I don't see Levin or Stabenow yet. Write them!

Break your chains Byron, GA | Seeing that a bill to outlaw the mailing of tobacco just passed the House 397 to 11 (with 25 present/not-voting), the odds of this happening are very slim.
Sadly. |
