At least that the headline at naturalnews.com. Sounds like big news. We have to do something about that! Tax soda!
I haven't read the study (no link to it at naturalnews) but I must point out the difference between a correlation and "cause and effect". "A whopping 62% of adults who drink at least one soda each day are overweight or obese." doesn't prove anything. We could just as easily create a study and find out that majority of the population both eat vegetables and are obese. Or at the most extreme, everyone who drinks soda dies. Now if a study showed those obese folks who drink sodas now would stop it and then become thin and if those that don't drink sodas now started drinking sodas and became obese then you'd be doing some real science. Even then it would be a leap that a 10 cents tax would change behavior.
If they could prove that a special tax on sugary drinks would make a dent in soda consumption MAYBE a tax could be justified - if you believe the idea that the government should try to influence your personal behavior by taking your money. Did soda consumption go down when they started the CRV tax? Doubt it. The proposed "good idea" tax will have little or no effect on the "problem" but it will give the state more of your money to play with. The quote rewritten with my embellishments: "38% of adults who drink at least one soda each day ARE NOT overweight or obese."

No wonder the ads for these devices are endless on TV. Who exactly expects government health care to reduce costs?
