Is Richard Burr a North Carolina Conservative?
A question that most Republicans would answer YES to, without any hesitation whatsoever. Before I will answer that question with a 'yes' so quickly, I would like to see the facts first. It takes more than a "R" beside the name of a candidate for me to support him or her. Let us take a hard look at the record of Senator Burr since he reached the US Senate and then you make your own decision on whether Senator Burr is conservative or simply another Rino Republican.
Exhibit A: No Child Left Behind
If ever there was a bad bill to be presented by a Conservative President, George W Bush's "No Child Left Behind" was creme de la creme. Expanding the power of the Federal Government, the US Department of Education, and increasing unfunded mandates on our local schools are the antithesis of conservatism. The legislation in question has been a disaster for local schools, teachers, administrators, and students. Our public education system has been injured in incalcuable ways as teachers spend their time and student's time satisfying the all powerful fed's by preparing students for a standardized test instead of teaching math, science, reading, and history. How on earth could a 'conservative' find it in his heart to vote for such repressive policy on a national level and then not even fund it? It is a mystery to me, but that is what Senator Burr did. Our good Senator joined hands with phony conservative George W. Bush and the Late Ted Kennedy and bastardized our local schools with the heavy hand of Federal Intervention. Not only did Burr's vote on this issue weaken the public schools, but he followed up with a no vote on block grants to local education agencies. It would seem that Senator Burr has no probem with flexing the muscle of the Federal Government in your local school, but he has a real problem with local control and decision making, as well as with helping to fund the initiatives he forces on others.
Exhibit B: FISA (warrantless wiretapping and other Constitution raping 'Security' matters)
In Senator Burr's vote to support the continuation of warrantless wire tapping, he has demonstrated a powerful statist streak in his bones, but not Conservatism that stands up for Liberty and the US Constitution. Whenever you get on the telephone or send an email, just remember that other eyes are likely reading and other ears are likely listening to all because Senator Burr demonstrated a terrible lapse in his promise to "Preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States".
Exhibit C: Fiscal Conservatism
Senator/Congressman Burr was a member of the House or Senate throughout Bush's massive expanision of the Federal Deficit and massive size of the three branches of the Federal Government. During Bush's 8 years, he and Burr oversaw an increase in the size of the Federal Government amounting to a tripling, that's right, triple of the combined institutions. Major tax cuts coupled with huge increases in spending led to a budget surplus becoming a massive budget deficit that has been greatly worsened by statist Democrats. What grounds could Burr argue against such insane spending when he, himself, had voted to do the same thing for the 4 years prior to comlete Democrat control over both houses of Congress and the Office of the Presidency?
Exhibit D: Abuse of Power by The Office of the President of the United States
Any Real Conservative (read..non Neo Con) would oppose the creation of an all powerful head of state in America, yet Senator Burr sat in silence as President Bush abused his office via the use of 'Signing Statements' and Executive Orders. As Congress would pass laws, President Bush would add a completely Unconstitutional Statement to the Bill that would proclaim the President's disapproval of specific portions of legislation and declare that he and his Office would not enforce portions that he disagree. No where in our Constitution does any President have the authority to disregard the Congress, but with a flick of his pen, George Bush did just that. Often, apparently, Burr agreed with The President and would therefore sit silently as the Constitution would be further abused by an all powerful individual. Such wreckless disregard is now being carried on by the new President and will continue to be co opted by the Office of the Presidency until a powerful Congress can be elected to stop this horrific abuse of power. We obviously cannot trust that Senator Burr will do anything to remedy the situation.
Exhibit E: TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program)
Senator Burr was a supporter of the Bailouts to Wall Street and Bankers that hung this nation out to dry with their 'new and innovative' financial instruments which lay waste to our economic system. Although I have yet to have the opportunity to ask Senator Burr why he defied his Constituency on TARP, I did ask a close associate of his at a GOP function in Pitt Co about the matter. The response I received was less than informative. "There were good reasons at the time." That's it. Not another word. My reaction was and is that If by 'good reasons' you mean Fear and Panic, then yes, I agree, there were good reasons for the Senator's vote on Tarp. Where I come from, however, fear and panic do not qualify for the label "good reasons." No doubt our Senator was in full blown panic mode. He demonstrated, clearly, both characteristics by not only voting to bail out Banksters on taxpayer's backs, but sending his lovely spouse out, before TARP got approved, to withdrawal every dollar possible from the Teller Machines of the very banks that he was about to bail out. I wish the story ended there, but sadly, it is only the tip of the iceberg.
Tarp was sold to the public by the President as a method of getting 'toxic assets' off the balance sheet of financial institutions and the good parts of those assets (mortgages that would be honored) would be property of the US taxpayers. Well, that turned out to be an outright lie. Somewhere between the story Bush gave the public and the bill that was signed and Burr voted for, all that changed and money was simply given directly to the troubled firms.
If that deception is not enough, then consider the 800+ billion dollar price tag that is still being claimed by government and most of the media. That figure is another fabrication. Few people realize that within the TARP legislation there were provisions that rewrote the rules regarding action that could be taken by The Federal Reserve and that the US Taxpayers would be liable for whatever action The Fed took with their new found powers. Although it is not possible to know how much taxpayers are on the hook for via the Fed (The Federal Reserve cannot be audited) Bloomberg.com had estimated that total expense including interest could mount upwards of 23 trillion dollars in the end.http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aY0tX8UysIaM
Other estimates, while not 23 trillion, still grossly exceed the approximately 800 billion told to citizens by the government and the media. Yet another source of information on the fleecing of America via TARP comes from none other than Dylan Ratigan, who called TARP the greatest con and coverup by the Congess, The Banks, and The Federal Reserve. Watch for yourself as Ratigan says Obama is lying about the "Big TARP Lie"...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGx6K0DVKZ8&feature=related
Richard Burr also cosponsored S.510 which is an unconstitutional bill that will require personal home-based growers of their own food to register and comply with government oversight, permission and inspection. target="_blank">http://www.facebook.com/note.php?saved&¬e_id=4818079 32925#!/note.php?note_id=425810766044&id=36617793&ref=mf
