Just sitting here very depressed by current events and the election and wondering......When is enough, enough? When is it time to decide NO MORE! What is the line in the sand? What right, taken away is one too many? What would the Founding Father's say? Samuel Adams said - If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen. Now that was a man of not just words, but action!

Talbert Black Jr Lexington, SC | I love that quote too! I just received a note from a contact in Charleston who has decided to write a letter to all her elected representatives, politely introducing herself and identifying herself as part of the C4L and letting them know that they will be carefully watched. I think I'll do the same. Let's let them know that we are vigilent and that we don't "love wealth better than liberty" nor "the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom". |

unused bagels lexington, SC | OH SNAP! I love that quote. Welcome, Suze. I don't exactly agree with your views on education (simply because Big Government's NCLB is trying to privatize and kickback the education system), but you seem level-headed and liberty-minded all the same. I don't see why everybody thinks that we have to agree on every policy to get along... AUGH I'm rambling.
Good quote. |

PalmettoTree Blythewood, SC | There is no good time for a tax increase. But the worst time is during a recession/depression. This guy thinks that an increase in tax rates will only reduce his income by +/- 17% (1/2 - 1/3). He doesn't realize that higher tax rates mean lower discretinary income for all consumers. For most people, having a NetFlix account is a discretionary item and you just did your part to teach him that lesson, Suzannah. Thank you. |

Talbert Black Jr Lexington, SC | Aw, he is full of bull anyway. Like his accounted doesn't find enough deductions to hide most of what he makes from the IRS anyway. Give me a freakin' break. He's not half as generous as he sounds. |

Why do we call it the Patriot Act? I'm sure it was meant to instill warm fuzzy feelings of FALSE Patriotism so that we would look the other way. It was the "spoon full of sugar", if you please. As word continues to filter out about "ordinary Americans" being caught in the web of the Patriot Act, will the masses wake up to the assault on our civil liberties? I have attached a story regarding a single mom whose life has been destroyed by the Patriot Act. She has not seen her children in more than a year.
Most Americans sit comfortably in front of their big screen TVs feeling good about their assumption that the Patriot Act protects them from the "bad guys". It brings to mind this poem:
When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I was not a Jew.
When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.
Mom arrested, jailed for disciplining kids on plane

The Patriot Act, designed to help fight terrorism, may be being misused.
The Patriot Act was enacted following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. But it has given airlines some latitude in dealing with what they may consider unruly behavior. A case in point is Tamara Jo Freeman, who in 2007 was flying on Frontier Airlines to Denver when she moderately spanked her unruly children, then responded with some profanities when confronted by a flight attendant. The Los Angeles Timesreported this week that Freeman was arrested and spent three months in jail before entering a guilty plea. Mat Staver with Liberty Counsel reacts to the story. "It makes no sense at all to convict some mother, who is trying to discipline her children, of violating a terrorism law -- a law that's defined as trying to stop terrorists, defined as trying to stop somebody from overthrowing or hijacking the plane," says the attorney.
Staver says that strangely enough, Freeman's case is not an isolated one. According to the LA Times, at least 200 airline passengers have been convicted under the amended Patriot Act -- many accused of simply raising their voice, using foul language, or being drunk. "This law is defying common sense," Staver states. "I don't think that was the intent of the law, and its application in this case and several other cases [has] nothing to do with protecting the people on the airplane." The Liberty Counsel founder says enforcement in these cases is so absurd that the law obviously needs to be changed. According to the Times, Freeman's conviction cost her custody of her children, who were placed in foster care during her incarceration. She is now trying to turn back legal proceedings in which the foster parents are seeking to adopt the children.

Talbert Black Jr Lexington, SC | This is crazy! How can we allow this to happen? Where is the outrage? Where are the demonstrations? |

libertyforme Lexington, SC | Good and very relevant post. Especially liked the poem. Think I'll copy that and put it up where my grandchildren can see it. As SonOfDixie said, where is the outrage? |

Tonight we had our first in a series of "Meet your Representative" events. Kudos to Talbert for bringing it all together! I was glad to see several other C4L members there. We sure would like to see more next time! Nikki Haley was our guest of honor. She spoke about the 2009 Spending Accountability Act, government accountability and reducing the roll of government. I found her to be very passionate about these issues and refreshingly honest. When she was challenged on some of her ideas, whe was straight forward and to use her words, "unapologetic". As a libertarian, I found much in her to like and would invite everyone to climb on board with the push for the 2009 Spending Accountability Act. If you aren't aware of what it is, you can check out her website at www.nikkihaley.com. Get involved! This is what we are here for people, we aren't the couch potatoes!
