Aired Friday, October 17, John Stossel lays out the case as to why we shouldn't want everything from government, and why we shouldn't expect life's answers from politicians.

Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and Part 6

Or available in a single file via Google Video.

I watched this program on YouTube last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The ice skating rink analogy was spot on and the information on campaign finance reform, running for office, and farming subsidies really interested me the most out of all of it.

I've always had a lot of respect for John Stossel. He's a dying breed when it comes to responsible journalism.

Watched it last night and I LOVED IT!! I already posted the youtube inks in a couple forums I belong to and it's been received well. Only thing is, it's disheartening to see people agree with everything he said, yet still don't get that we can have fruitful lives without all the government intervention.

Anyway, John Stossel is great, I've enjoyed his reports since I was in my early 20's. :)

An accessible video with a very important theme. Individuals, families, and societies survive and thrive without government interference. People know how to live and succeed, we don't need the help of beaurocrats!

Governments cannot manage an entire civilization, and when they try to the results are disastrous.

I watched this yesterday on dailypaul.com, then sent 20/20 a thank you email. I love to watch John Stossel. Thank you, Marianne, for posting the video.

The group of Colorado residents interviewed in the campaign finance reform section (the so-called "Parker North 6") were represented by the Institute for Justice (www.ij.org). It's a great organization that provides legal services to challenge unconstitutional laws in the areas of economic liberty, free speech, and property (eminent domain takings). They also defend school choice programs. IJ is a great organization that I recommend people take a look at. To my knowledge, it's the only libertarian civil litigation firm in the U.S.

(Full disclosure: I used to be a law clerk there)

Yesterday's Star Tribune reports on Rosella Sonsteby, a rebel running for mayor of Andover, MN at age 92.

She's not crazy about youngsters like John McCain or Barack Obama, but she's hoping Ron Paul will make a comeback in this presidential election.

Rosella, you have two decades on the good doctor, so there's always a chance, if not necessarily for this election.

It's true: Dr. Paul's revolution is really taking off with the young...and the young at heart. Go, Rosella, go.

WSJ reports today that the US government will be buying portions of nine top banks as part of the Bailout package:

To kick off Tuesday's expected announcement, the government is set to buy preferred equity stakes in Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp.—including the soon-to-be acquired Merrill Lynch—Citigroup Inc., Wells Fargo & Co., Bank of New York Mellon and State Street Corp., according to people familiar with the matter. Some of the big banks were unhappy about the government taking equity stakes, but acquiesced under pressure from Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in a meeting Monday.  During the financial crisis, the government has steadily increased its involvement in financial markets, culminating with a move that rivals the breadth of the government's response to the Great Depression.  It intertwines the banking sector with the federal government for years to come and gives taxpayers a direct stake in the future of American finance, including any possible losses.

Remind your Representative this is what he/she voted for (if so), as there is surely more to come.  Then get out there and work for the ones who had the backbone to vote against nationalization of the banks.

Bombs away socialism.

We really need Andrew Jackson to be President right now. He's sort this out in a hurry.

I can't believe the headlines. They say things like "Bush new move intended to preserve free market". They have no idea how wrong that statement is! You can't preserve a free market by interfering. That is how you destroy a free market. I can't believe this!

At least I had a warm drink before seeing this. For what it's worth, I'm glad the banks are putting up some resistance.

The banks want it both ways, they wont socialism and bailouts when times are hard, but when things get better they want free-markets.

I was just listening to a radio news report ... carrying Paulson's announcement of the Bank Buyout .... Paulson made comments indicating that this is an unpopular move and even he detested doing it .... HOWEVER, according to the report, not all the banks wanted to be part of this ... feeling that they were solvent enough to go it along .... and that they were PRESSURED into taking part in this.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

$25 billion is sliding through in low-interest loans to the Big Three Automakers.

From cars.com blog today:

The latest budget bill from the U.S. Senate allegedly came together under a veil of secrecy and will be sent to the president to be signed. This bill is what is being discussed when you hear about Democrats lifting the ban on offshore drilling on the news. It is a different measure than the energy bill we discussed last week from the U.S. House of Representatives.

A budget bill needs to pass before an Oct. 1 deadline, and the majority of the bill includes major funding for the Pentagon ($488 billion) Homeland Security ($40 billion) and veterans and military ($73 billion).

In comparison, the $25 billion in low-interest loans for the U.S. auto industry to fund advanced technology doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. While it won’t fix everything wrong with the Detroit Three, it should lead to more-efficient cars as well as alternative-fuel and hybrid vehicles in the next few years from Ford, GM and Chrysler.

What else are they sneaking through while our eyes are averted toward the economic trainwreck? (Thanks to Norann for the heads-up.)

So impressed was I with G Edward Griffin's video, An Idea Whose Time Has Come, that I played a couple clips for our meeting of local coordinators this past weekend. This video is a must-see for anyone who truly wants to be a part of turning our country back around.

Griffin explores how lovers of liberty can retake power. Specifically, he tackles why we have such a hard time convincing others to get active in this mission. If you only have a few minutes, zoom forward to minute 10 to view his analogy of the ship, our government, which has been hijacked by power-hungry pirates, and how we need to mount a counter-coup to retake the ship.

G Edward Griffin is the principal of Freedom Force, fighting the expansion of government power and the corresponding loss of personal liberty, and is the author of The Creature from Jekyll Island, a historical look at the Federal Reserve.
