Long time no blog...yada...yada...yada...Wink

I've been spending quite a bit of time acquiring books from Mises and Ron Paul's reading list along with reading posts on LewRockwell.  Those posts lead me to the 'Molon Labe' book by Boston T. Party and the various writings of Lysander Spooner.  It has given me a lot to think about and digest and is part of the reason I haven't blogged here in quite a while.

I really enjoyed the 'Molon Labe' book as it gave a fully thought out and feasible (although unlikely) plan of action for real Liberty lovers.  Many people have asked 'What can I do?' when they are ignored by their government and the book provides many answers.  Give it a read and you won't be sorry.

If you want to push the reset button on this Country and start over, then Lysander Spooner is for you.  The implemenation of his ideas and beliefs would create a Country which has never been seen on this planet and would totally eliminate all the failures of our Demo/Republic.

I'm leaning toward Mr. Spooner as I become more and more convinced that there is no hope in saving our system.  It is no different than having a house infested with mold and sewage and chemical waste after a flood.  Would you just shovel it out and let it dry or bulldoze the entire thing and build it from scratch?

Speaking as an Engineer, we run into this problem quite often when working on equipment or designs.  It is very common to try to get legacy systems to keep running but applying band-aid after band-aid just avoids the real issue.

Even the Founders went back to the drawing board after the 'Articles of Confederation' failed miserably...Wink

During the primaries, as I was talking to my boss about the Ron Paul campaign, he asked if I had any ideas on how to fix the current mess which is our government.  Plenty of thoughts crossed my head from the things I have read and researched but nothing came to mind that was original.  Everything I was supporting was either already in the Constitution or being promoted by others...I didn't have any ideas of my own.  This is not necessarily a bad thing but it did kick start my idle thoughts..

I began thinking about the shift in the Ron Paul movement to take back Congress and how Ron Paul has been pretty much alone for his decades of public service.  So, I focused my idle thoughts on how Congress could be improved.  I thought of the many checks and balances in our system and one of the least understood and most avoided jumped into my brain...A Jury!

Everyone knows about a Jury and most people talk about them as something to be avoided but it is a powerful check on government abuse.  If any citizen is charged with a crime and brought before the government, a Jury of their peers will be there to ensure justice is done. If you spend some time researching 'Jury Nullification' you can see just how powerful a Jury can be.

If a Jury could be used to protect a single citizen from the abuses of government then why not a Jury to protect ALL citizens.  So, I propose that a Jury should be convened to review every piece of legislation passed by the House and the Senate.  The Jury would be given a copy of the Constitution and a copy of the proposed new legislation.  The Jury would decide if the new bill met the standards of the Constitution and could be sent on to the President.

This would eliminate:
  • Lobbyists: Why bribe a congress person with trips and lunches if a few random citizens can veto a bill?
  • Pork: No way will a congress person get pork for their district when, most likely, the Jury won't be from their district.
  • PAC Money: A total waste since money spent electing someone will have zero effect on the Jury.
  • Elitists: Being a congress person will be returned to the status of serving your country and not any personal need for power.
and so on...

Imagine if the recent legislation of the last few months and years would have faced a test by 'We The People'.  Imagine if the FED and the IRS legislation never made it to the Presidents desk.

I'm sure there are many facets to this system which I haven't considered but it has provided me with an answer for my boss...:)
