Adam de Angeli, helping a booth visitor sign the Audit the Fed petition (HR 1207 and S 604) and Michigan Sovereignty petitions. This can be a time consuming task because most visitors don't know which congressional district they live in, and many do not know the name of their representative. When it comes to the Michigan House and Senate districts, they are even less likely to be aware of that information. So, we kept a book handy to look that up based on where they live.
Tony DeMott and Dave Franklin explaining to another visitor what CFL is all about, and inviting him to sign a petition to get Rep. John Dingell and Sens. Levin and Stabenow to call for an audit of the Federal Reserve.
You can just see Joe in the back - Joe and Christe came from out of the county to help out in Ann Arbor. We had a very busy booth all week, and having several people at the booth at all times was critical - so all help was greatly appreciated!
Tony and Dave explain to yet more booth visitors what it is we're about, and what we're working on.
The whiteboard really came in handy - we used it to challenge passersby with a quiz question about the Federal Reserve. Quiz-takers won candy, stickers, literature, and an invitation to sign the petition (of course!).
The quiz proved to be a fun way to engage people on an issue that they don't realize they should care about. At Art Fair, people are there for a carnival experience - look around, buy stuff, eat an elephant ear, that sort of thing. For the most part, they don't come to be political. There are always a few who will spot your group and identify immeadiately with your concerns (taxes, government, inflation, etc), but if you only draw those who are already aware, you lose a major opportunity to reach beyond those numbers to the general unknowing public. I wish I had caught on video all of the surprised looks from those who learned for the first time that the Fed is a private bank. You can see the connections suddenly take place, and that person understands why the Fed must be fully audited.
Further, and maybe more important - if the question is fun and the attitude of the booth volunteers light - that person whose day you've interrupted is much more likely to see you as a 'normal person' than one of those crazy people on the political fringe. They're now willing to view you and your organization as credible, and even sign up for your cause. Most people know so little about the government, legislation, and monetary policy that they cannot relate to those who are overtly passionate or intellectual about it. On the other hand, I didn't keep any stats but many more people than you would think did get the questions right!
Getting ready for more visitors to come by!
