Top lawmakers in the House and Senate reached a deal to extend the Patriot Act for four years, a week before key provisions were set to expire.
The pieces of the law that allow the federal government to compel businesses to release records, issue roving wiretaps, and monitor so-called "lone wolf" terror suspects were set to run out on May 27. The outline of the deal between Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) still needs to pass both chambers in the next seven days to avoid a lapse in the law.
Boenher, Reid, Cantor, McConnell, and every one of our elected officials need to hear from us right away. While resistance wasn't enough to keep the bill from being temporarily extended in February, the reluctance is growing on Capitol Hill, and we need to do everything we can to encourage it. Matter of fact, without Rand Paul and true patriots taking a stand back then, a multi-year extension would already certainly be the law of the land.
Thanks to C4L picking a fight when the establishment was not expecting one, and Senator Paul's objection to the unanimous consent motion last evening, the Senate amended H.R. 514 to make it a 3-month extension of the so-called "PATRIOT" Act.
This is a partial victory and we must now redouble our efforts as the fight continues. Your continued pressure on the House and Senate combined with Rand's leadership prevented the Senate from passing a proposed 3-year extension as they were hoping.
Before the new deadline, Harry Reid has promised to give the bill a week of consideration with amendments and debates. The amended version passed 86-12 just moments ago. Click here for the roll call and stay tuned for more information.
YAL's Jeff Frazee gave Dr. Paul a great introduction, and, while I'm sure the applause was loud on television, there was nothing quite like being in the room with all our liberty-loving activists!
Senator Paul's speech was just one highlight of an amazing day. Thanks to Tom Woods, Jack Hunter, Congressman Paul, and Senator Paul for an incredible Liberty Forum last night, where the standing room crowd easily surpassed 1,000 and set a new record for a C4L event at CPAC.
At the end, Senator Paul used his father's catchphrase: Freedom is popular!
Everyone is greatly looking forward to Congressman Paul's speech today at 3:30pm eastern! (Occasionally, CPAC's main event runs a bit behind, so if you turn it on CSPAN 2 and don't see him, just give it a few minutes.)
Williams correctly points out if they strictly adhered to such a rule, "their ability to spend and confer legislative favors would be virtually eliminated. Also, if the rule were to be applied to existing law, they'd wind up repealing at least two-thirds to three-quarters of congressional spending."
He continues by highlighting that neither public works projects, nor charitable efforts, are or ever were authorized by the Constitution and specifically highlights a few Presidential vetoes to exemplify his point.
Congressman Paul was on MSNBC this morning to discuss the proposal to strip the Federal Reserve of its employment mandate. The interview turned into a broader discussion on what the role of government should be in our lives and as Dr. Paul said, the role is very clearly laid out in the Constitution.

Judge Napolitano's Freedom Watch has stood out among the crowd - a reasoned, passionate call for liberty in direct opposition to the echo chamber that is usually the media.
Now comes this latest news from the Judge's Twitter feed:
You demanded it, and now you got it! FreedomWatch is on Fox Business DAILY! Monday November 15th at 8PM EDT! Liberty is on the March!
Freedom Watch has quickly risen to become the most popular show on Fox Business - exposing the liberty message and our principles to a wider audience than ever before.
Congratulations to the Judge, and may this move only add to our ranks!
Despite the delays, the so-called "Food Safety Modernization Act" (S.510) remains a major threat to local food networks and market-based food systems. S.510 empowers the FDA with totalitarian authority over the whole gamut of food, and would give the regulatory agency the ability to wantonly impose burdensome requirements on even the smallest of food processors, e.g. a local family farm.
Hoping to quell the concerns of liberty activists, proponents of expanding the government's control over what we put into our own bodies point to the latest version of S.510, which includes a few provisions that recognize the difference in scale between large manufacturing plants and your local farms; however, the vast majority of these provisions are actually left to the FDA's discretion. In other words, it will be up to whomever Obama puts in charge of the FDA to decide whether or not your local food network is crushed by federal regulations, or simply shut down if the G-men have "reason to believe" the food on the premises is contaminated.
Does this sound like America to you, or the Soviet Union?
Fortunately, the positive message of the decentralized food freedom movement is spreading. More and more documentaries like the one below are being produced; they highlight the war on family and local farms being waged by the federal government, and what we need to do to put an end to it. Aside from watching movie trailers, it would also be incumbent of you to contact your senators and ask that they oppose a food dictatorship by voting "no" on S.510.
