Washtenaw Citizens Against the Regional Enhancement Millage (WCAREM)! (Posted 2009/10/12)
The Washtenaw Intermediate School Districts (WISD) has placed a proposal for a "Regional Enhancement Millage" on the November 3 ballot. The WISD campaign for the 2.0 mill increase has become highly misleading and emotional for a millage which would be added onto an already existing set of taxes and millages. In addition, it was revealed (via Freedom of Information Act requests) that the WISD has not performed an economic analysis of their situation and have shown no rational justification for their actions. All this being said...
How can you get involved?
The Washtenaw Citizens Against the Regional Enhancement Millage (WCAREM) has been formed by the Wastenaw County Campaign for Liberty in order to provide up-to-date information on meetings/events/general updates! From the Ann Arbor News:
The cost of parking in downtown Ann Arbor goes up Wednesday.
On-street meter rates - which have been $1 an hour - go up 20 cents. The rate will go up 20 more cents in July 2011.
The rates in surface lots will go up over the same period. Those increases will come at a rate of a dime a year, starting in July.
In parking structures, hourly rates - which have been 80 cents an hour - will increase 10 cents a year through 2011.
Monthly fees will go up from $125 to $130 in July, and another $5 a year in July 2010 and 2011.
Hourly rates in parking structures and surface lots were rolled back in 2005 and on-street rates increased - a combination meant to make off-street parking more attractive. There have been no other changes since.
The rate changes were put in place by the Downtown Development Authority in February. The DDA sets parking rates. The City Council can object, but needn't approve, changes. The council declined to weigh in, letting changes take effect...
Send thanks to Mayor Hieftje, DDA board member.

Greetings all,
I write to you with a heavy heart, knowing that many of my peers will be facing the difficult task of restructuring budgets in the IMMEDIATE future.
The state of Michigan passed Executive Order 2009-22 earlier this week authorizing a 4.8% cut to its revenue sharing to local municipalities.
Although we certainly do not want to be dependent on any form of government, we may use this historic event as an opportunity--TO OPEN PEOPLE'S EYES TO THE TRUTH.
This cut to our local revenue sharing IS A VERY BIG DEAL!
I cannot speak for the rest of the state, but in my tiny township of Bridgewater, our revenue sharing makes up almost 25% of our budget. This 4.8% cut alone would DROWN us if we were not aptly prepared with a stable contingency and fund balance; in fact, we may be able to survive long after many of our peers because of this fact.
What I am suggesting to you is this: We need to tap into the energy that is quickly being created by this announcement of fund-cutting; there is a strange sort of momentum that gets behind and around the local officials' circles when something like this happens to affect ALL OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME!
Go to your township board meetings, and start with a whisper--let them know that you are aware of what is happening with the state revenue cut, and that you want to help in WHATEVER WAY YOU CAN. Offer to paint a wall in the townhall for no charge, to serve on a committee without compensation, or help file paperwork after school...
BE AVAILABLE. When times get tougher, we all seek the voice of Truth.
Jolea Mull, Bridgewater Township Supervisor
