Interim county coordinator(s):
Shawnee County, Kansas is a great place to grow up, raise a family, work, have a business, and make lifelong friendships.
Shawnee includes the City of Topeka which is the State Capital.
The population of the County is roughly 150,000 persons.
There is a diverse economy including alot of government jobs (local, county, state and federal); transportation hub (Target, Santa Fe, etc.); some important manufacturing (Goodyear, etc.); convention and tourism. People come from all over Northeast Kansas to do their retail and wholesale shopping in Topeka.
The electorate tends to conservative, certainly more conservative than our neighboring County to the east (Douglas). Yet there is a strong "independent" voter tradition in Shawnee County also.
The demographic mix is quite diverse, with a sizeable population of european, native american, african american, hispanic, and other ethnic backgrounds all represented.
Educational opportunities abound. There is a strong public school system supplemented with private school options. Washburn University has over 10,000 students and is part of the State University Board of Regents system.

Beyond all other lesser issues, the number one challenge facing Americans today is re-gaining control over our government. Our political system has reached the point it is substantially financed by narrow special interests and in turn it largely serves those narrow interests. The voters are left to chew on nearly meaningless, inflammatory topics that political marketers know will polarize and separate us into easily digested voting units. Then once their financed candidates are elected, the special interests can move in with their agendas.
As citizens, we have to put smaller differences aside and re-gain control over our government first.
