In case you missed the details, our representative, Mike Simpson, voted in support of the extension of the Patriot Act.  Anybody feel this is extending the cause for freedom in Southeastern Idaho?

There is a gentleman running for congress in the 2nd congressional district of Idaho against (~R)Mike Simpson. Chick Heileson seems very constitutional which would make him a GREAT replacement for our current congressman, have any of you heard much about him?

Here is his website: www.votechick.com

This certainly is an endorsement video, but it asks an important question: is this the proper role of our city government?

Following is a complete transcript of an email sent to members of the Idaho Falls community today; anybody else take issue with this?   Remember, this is the same lady who wrote a letter to the Post Register coining the term "FROG - Fair Weather Republican's Opposed to Growth."  (Emphasis added):

Dear Friends,

The fact that the city elections are non-partisan may have led you to believe that your support is not important, but  I suggest to you that it is more important right now than ever before.  There is a faction of our party that is seeking to transform our organization into the Ron Paul Party, and to that end have created a great deal of divisiveness  in our county.   (I couldn't care less who votes for and supports Ron Paul, I just want them to form their own dang party.)

Leaders of this group seem to believe that their interpretation of the Constitution is the only one that counts, and come to think of it, they are the only ones who even know there is such a document.  Their nearly Libertarian philosophy has led them to proclaim that Idaho Falls is more heavily taxed than most other places you may wish to live, which untruth has now been uncovered.  Idaho Falls is currently 16th in the state of Idaho!  But arguments to the contrary carry absolutely no weight in their minds.  Don't confuse us with the facts.

Second, they have implied dereliction of duty in the city's purchase of the Farr property, which Ken Taylor has addressed, again falling on deaf ears.
Child care protection has also taken a hit, even though those very restrictions have proved efficacious  in just the last two weeks in preventing three applications from being granted due to unworthiness.

Much has been said about traditional family values, and for my quite restrictive personal requirements, I  could not find anywhere any people better to my liking than the three incumbents who are currently running for re-election.

The problem is that a large number of people who vote, select their candidates based upon slogans, thus our challenger's continual use of "lower taxes,"  "family values," and "conservative principles."  Many will simply look to see who is supporting whom, and vote accordingly.

That's where you and I come in.  Regardless of their efforts to make this a partisan election, either by law or fiat, we must not allow it.  Already their narrow concentration has led to the loss of  friends to the church because the ultra-right faction is seen as the GOP Party in Bonneville County, and also as the LDS Church in Bonneville County.  To this end, this faction is doing great harm.  We have the power to stop it now.

Some Republicans and members of the church have expressed no small amount of fear in bucking this faction with its concentrated power and organization.  I must say, that if that is the case, we are in even greater danger than I thought and the demand for our action all the more pressing.

Please do not allow this to happen to this lovely city.  Take a stand now by allowing us to use your name in supporting  these great incumbent members of the city council.  If you have questions about their performance or any of the above topics or others, please contact the incumbent yourself.  Do not assume you are getting the correct stances from their opponents.  Doesn't work that way, as you can see by their continual use of misinformation.

We would like to use your name in a support ad for both Karen and Ida if you will agree.  Please respond as soon as you read this because time is of the essence.  There will be no charge.

For those of you who don't feel the Campaign for Liberty or being a Ron Paul Republican has ties to city council races, would you please consider the following:

This morning, I was emailed a Facebook "Note" that a friend had (inadvertently) been tagged in.  I post an excerpt here to let you read what the defenders of Karen Cornwell, Ida Hardcastle, and Ken Taylor think about Ron Paul.

I'm sure you are all familiar with the term "RINO," but may not have heard the term "FROG."  My neighbor, Kathy Stanger, wrote a piece for the Post Register explaining how the Ron Paul Republicans are "FROGS" . . . Fair Weather Republicans Opposed to Growth.  I could write novels on her article, but I'll refrain here; I simply wanted you to know what the term "FROG" implies.

Here is a piece of what my friend sent me this morning (emphasis added)

"Dear friends, we RINOs are desperately trying to save the city elections from the FROGs ... and we need the help of you who long ago got fed up with the Republican Party in Bonneville County....Will you please use your considerable influence to help us in any possible way?  I apologize for a political note, but hope you may have someone who would carry the ball for you.  To lose Karen Cornwell or Ida Hardcastle to the likes of their competitors will be a very sad turn of events for this great city....We simply and completely underestimated the depth of guile these people own.  They are followers of Ron Paul who has taught them how to insinuate themselves into an existing party organization, and then with their considerable cadre of fellow blinder-wearing comrades, they are redesigning it in Ron Paul's image.  Please help us if you can."

If you're up for a fight in the Idaho Falls area, please call me at 208-351-4675; I'd be happy to organize a lunch or cottage meeting so you can meet the candidates for city council.  I have known Barbara Ehardt for quite some time, she is running against Karen Cornwell.  I have spoken with Karen myself and heard her cry for higher taxes . . . she truly believes higher taxes are needed Idaho Falls and is fighting for it.

Thanks for reading!

This afternoon I attended the Chamber of Commerce forum for the candidates of the city council races in Idaho Falls.  Barbara Ehardt gave numerous stirring remarks as to the proper role of government . . . kudos to her!

During the forum, one of the remarks from Karen Cornwell (whom Barbara is running against) was that the voting results in the city council were not always 6-0.  So, after the forum, I approached Karen and asked her if she wouldn't mind naming an issue where she was the dissenting vote and why.

Karen thought a bit . . . and a bit more . . . and then apologized saying that I had put her on the spot.  She thought some more . . . and finally replied that when the issue came up as to the levy decrease that she was opposed to lowering the levy.  She said she even spoke publicly against lowering the levy; but, that in order to save time since she knew she would lose the vote, she voted yes on decreasing the levy.  She then went on with the example that when Larry Lyons (sic) was on the city council he would consistently vote no, no, no on votes knowing full well that he was going to lose the vote.  She attempted to reason with me that such a stance was ludicrous and a waste of time.

I'm not sure if I was able to keep my jaw off the floor.  This type of "leadership" is not what I want in my city.  I prefer someone with a backbone.  My experience tells me that it is candidates who believe in principles that are willing to stand up and make their voice heard loud and clear "NO" to big government . . . NO to more taxes . . . NO to sacrificing freedom for security!

This appears to be a form letter, but I just wanted to update you all on where our elected leader stands on these issues.

Dear Nathan:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the financial crisis facing our nation.  I appreciate hearing from you and having the opportunity to respond.

Like many Idahoans, I am disgusted that, despite Congress’s explicit instructions, scrutiny and oversight of the Temporary Asset Relief Program (TARP), which was created under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act that was signed into law last fall, has been spotty and best and in some cases downright non-existent.  Within days of its enactment, I expressed my concern to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that the taxpayer funds provided through TARP were not being used in the way Congress intended and were being used to boost a few healthy institutions instead of benefiting the entire system.  Congress insisted on transparency and accountability, yet we still do not know how the institutions who received funding are using it.  This is unacceptable.

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 only released half of the TARP funding and gave Congress the authority to disapprove the release of the second half.  When the White House requested that Congress release the remaining $350 billion, I voted to disapprove providing the additional funding.  Hardworking Idahoans expect value and accountability for every dollar they send to Washington, and I cannot support any continuation of this program without clear and fundamental changes to ensure that the taxpayers’ investment pays long-term dividends.

I am deeply concerned about efforts to bail out specific industries, including the U.S. automobile industry.  The challenges facing working families in Idaho are very sobering, and in the midst of economic anxieties that our country has not faced for generations, they are struggling to pay their bills and are worried about their job security.  Congress must stop throwing money at these problems, choosing a short-term political fix instead of long-term solutions.  Instead, we must work to fix problems so that the free market system can work and remove the barriers that make it difficult for American families to prosper.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact me about this issue.  As your representative in Congress, it is important to me to know your thoughts and opinions about issues affecting our nation today.  I also encourage you to visit my website, www.house.gov/simpson, to sign up for my e-newsletter and to read more about my views on a variety of issues.

Sincerely,

Mike Simpson
Member of Congress

Simpson votes no on releasing additional TARP funds

Post Register

Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson on Thursday voted against providing additional funding for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

The resolution was passed by a vote of 270-155.

“I am disgusted that, despite Congress’s explicit instructions, scrutiny and oversight of this massive program has been spotty at best and in some cases downright non-existent,” Simpson said.

Last fall, Congress approved $700 billion in TARP funding last fall to prevent the meltdown of the U.S. financial system by purchasing troubled assets from institutions that were suffering acutely under the burden created by the housing crisis.

Simpson voted for that bill.

However, those funds were never used for the intended purpose but were redirected, without the consent of Congress, for other purposes, including a bail out of the U.S. automobile industry, according to a press release Simpson issued Thursday.

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 only released half of the TARP funding and gave Congress the authority to disapprove the release of the second half.

Last week the White House has requested that Congress release the remaining $350 billion.

While the House voted today to disapprove obligation of the remaining $350 billion under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, last week the Senate approved giving the additional money to the Administration.

Well Congressman, I have a few words to say to you.... You're a little to late!!! A large majority of your constituents (including me) came to you in the fall of 2008 with phone calls, emails, and visits urging you to vote NO on the first half of the Unconstitutional TARP funds, but you decided that you knew what was best and voted YES anyway.   Now I am almost positive that you regret the moment you said YES on passing this act in the first place.

Maybe next time you will listen to what your constituents are saying to you....

First, I want to explain that I came upon this website thanks to C4L's very own "StatusQuoJoe" who posted the link.

I am so impressed with the amount of information Chris Martenson has compiled and way in which he has presented it. This "crash course" examines the relationship between problems that plague our nation and the world - problems that are growing exponentially.  It delves into each subject - our money system, peak oil, debt, fuzzy accounting etc. and explains each with statistics, graphs and examples.  I know Chris Martenson is correct when he says that the next twenty years will be like nothing this nation (and indeed the entire world) has ever seen before.

The presentation is totally non-partisan; it does not require you to join anything;  it does not attempt to link events to conspiracies and the conclusions are entirely logical.  In other words, this is an exciting, credible tool for educating the masses.

I found it extremely entertaining, to boot!
