Our goal is to obtain a commitment from all Iowa senators and congressman to support a comprehensive audit of the Fed by co-sponsoring the bills that have been introduced.
In our previous attempt to pass Audit the Fed legislation (HR 1207 / S 604), ALL of Iowa's U.S. Senators and Representatives were onboard as co-sponsors. Why do we need to push such an effort again? The 2010 Audit the Fed Law was a watered down version, modified from the original to placate the Federal Reserve objections and Wall Street interests. The 2010 Fed Audit Law didn't allow a "comprehensive" audit.
As of June 1st, there are currently a total of 6 sponsors in the U.S. Senate for S 202, and 154 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Tom Latham is the only representative from Iowa who has signed on as a co-sponsor. We need to contact our elected representatives in Washington and get them onboard. Hand written letters sent to the local Iowa offices are among the most effective techniques, as are petition drives, and simply visiting their local office. Being polite, but earnest about your issue, and even going so far as to make an appointment before you arrive can get your voice heard.
You can find out more about this project by visiting the Iowa project website below. You can also visit the official Audit the Fed website below, or find more information on Facebook and Twitter. You can find contact information for your representatives on both the project website and the Audit the Fed website. Congressman Latham has already signed on, but you can still write and thank him for his support.
On Saturday, May 21, 2011, approximately twenty people convened at Johnston Public Library between 1300 and 1530 to discuss ways to support Campaign for Liberty's mission: to promote and defend the great American principles of individual liberty, constitutional government, sound money, free markets, and a non-interventionist foreign policy, by means of educational and political activity.
Some among the speakers of the day were Matt DeVries, Jill Ellsworth, Glen Massie, and Ross Witt.
Mr. DeVries chaired the meeting, and discussed current events within the Campaign for Liberty. We learned that many of the state and county leaders have left or would be leaving their positions within Campaign for Liberty while supporting their candidate during the 2012 presidential election campaign. During the interim, anyone interested is encouraged to assume these vacant positions. Dusty Juhl, from Ames, is currently the interim state coordinator.
Glen Massie, who was elected to Represent District 74, explained some differences between serving at State and Federal levels, and offered some insight into the legislative process, especially as it applies to the Iowa capitol. He also talked about the best ways to affect change within our government, which is to fill the seats with people who don't cater to party authority, but to the Constitution and its principles. He also recommended some books, The Making of America, The Creature from Jekyl Island, and Liberty Defined.
Mr. Witt discussed the Federal Reserve, and especially how through our efforts we were able to push through a bill to audit the federal reserve bank, but how ultimately it was diluted and adulterated so that little remained of the original bill by the time it made it to the next level. Government obfuscation was brought up. I stated that if you don't support auditing or ending the federal reserve, then you condone fraud. Central banking was shown to be inherently corrupt and how elitists enjoy all of the rewards and none of the risks of the market because of it.
Other points were brought up, to include Real ID, Parental Rights, unpasteurized milk, and other ways individual liberty has been chained to the wall, right next to a pile of government applications for a hall pass. Make it a goal of yours to talk to as many people as you can about the straw poll in Ames and energize people to become politically active: participate in town hall meetings, caucuses, and future Campaign for Liberty meetings.
On the heels of the release of his new book, The Tea Party goes to Washington, Senator Rand Paul made his first trip to Iowa last Friday and Saturday. Enthusiasm was high, as Senator Paul was warmly received all across Iowa.
The Senator's first stop was to the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters to meet with party leaders, including chairman Matt Strawn.
Friday night, Dr. Paul gave a speech on the campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The next morning was filled with media interviews and a book signing at Iowa State University in Ames. Supporters lined up for a personalized copy of The Tea Party goes to Washington.
After the drive back to Des Moines, the Senator addressed the State Convention of the Iowa Federation of College Republicans, then went to the Capitol for a private meeting with Iowa Governor Terry Branstad.
The afternoon included another book signing event in West Des Moines and meetings with several of Iowa's top conservative leaders.
On Saturday night, Senator Paul was the featured speaker at the Iowa GOP's "Night of the Rising Stars" event. This event celebrates Iowa's newly-elected Republicans and was the perfect place to showcase America's newest Rising Star - Senator Rand Paul! An enthusiastic crowd of nearly 500 high-profile Iowa Republicans greeted the Senator. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley gave Dr. Paul a warm introduction. Feedback after the speech has ranged from excitement to amazement as Iowans had their first chance to hear directly from Senator Paul.
C-SPAN was there, and full video of Senator Paul's keynote address (and introduction by Senator Grassley) can be seen at this link.
Senator Paul's Iowa visit was widely covered by the media. Check out some of the coverage:

The Johnson County, Iowa Campaign for Liberty group has branched out, into the Medical School. A month ago I started the newest student group in the college, Medical Students for Liberty.
During the first meeting a presentation was given covering an overview of the core principles:
Return to a Constitutionally Limited Government
Sound Money
Free Market Solutions
Non Interventionist Foreign Policy
The college invited representitives from our two senators, Grassley(R) and Harkin (D) to "debate" health care reform. Do we want big government solutions or bigger government solutions? Several Medical Students for Liberty members were there, voicing their solutions for LESS government and a Free Market Solution to the health care problems.
Our second meeting included a special speaker, Jonathan Narcisse, author of the platform "An Iowa Worth Fighting For". Recent speculation puts Narcisse in the middle of the 2010 Iowa Governor race, so it was exciting to hear his plan for the state.
We have also received press coverage in our University newspaper, the Daily Iowan. And have been invited to write an OpEd about healthcare reform for a future issue.
Who would have thought there would be such a thirst for Liberty in such a liberal institution as this Medical School.
