I joined the Campaign for Liberty a few days ago because I find that the principles posted in the C4L's Statement of Principles would, if diligently and fearlessly applied, restore true individual freedom to the men and women of this nation. I did not join C4L in order to belong to any party. I believe that politics should be about principles, not parties or personalities.
Let me tell you why I am opposed to "party politics":
Party politics breeds intellectual laziness and promotes 'groupthink'. When a person joins a certain political party, that person can find a complete package of pre-reasoned conclusions drawn for him or her. Because that person gains an affinity for that group of men and women, he or she begins to trusts the party, beginning to feel safe adopting the pre-packaged conclusions as his or her own. Haven't you heard many say something to this effect: "Well, I'm a Republican, and Republicans don't believe in that." Great, then tell us what you believe, not what your party believes! Dare to have your own opinion!
Example: Last night at our local REC meeting, I met Art Argenio, who is running for a seat opening up in the Florida Senate. I explained to him that I was not a Republican, that I don't like wearing labels, but that if I had to wear one, it would be libertarian. (Please keep in mind, that libertarian describes my personal philosophical preference and worldview, not some party I belong to.) He explained to me that he's not a libertarian because of his pro-life position; he said that most libertarians are pro-choice. Well see, that's where I don't fit in, because I am not a party-bot. Although I realize that the 'orthodox libertarian position' on this should be that a woman is free to do what she wishes with her life, I don't always follow the 'orthodox' positions of other libertarians. I am my own man who draws his own conclusions, and the conclusion I have drawn about this matter derives from my own carefully reasoned principles, not from a party line. Let us never adopt the conclusions of others because they wear a label we like!
Party politics breeds political laziness. Years of conditioning by the nanny state have taught us not to trust ourselves at all, and it naturally follows that human beings would love to delegate responsibilities and tasks to others. When people feel that they can count on committees and divisions and what have you to do the footwork, they are no longer motivated to do anything. They may come to think that because the tasks are in good hands, they may sit on theirs. Now, I don't mean everyone, obviously; I'm simply speaking of people generally.
Example: Our bloated, increasingly corrupt law enforcement agencies. Who is to say that the 'local' (federally funded) police department is more effective in preventing the robbery of a convenience store than would be five no-nonsense customers wearing handguns? We need to take active roles in policing our own neighborhoods and cities (by the way, many police officers and sheriff's deputies do not even live in the neighborhoods they are assigned to protect). We need to take back control of law enforcement by starting neighborhood watch groups in our neighborhoods and cities. Let's quit ceding control to the so-called 'professionals', buying them more patrol cars, guns, listening devices, and other tools that are increasingly used to deprive true Americans of their liberties!
We need to be honest with ourselves and admit that while there are some very courageous and honest officers out there involved in protecting the public, they are not doing all that great of a job managing their resources or preventing crime (which is why they are forced to rely more and more on 'snitches' and confidential informants). When these departments (at the behest of their 'orders' from Washington) are spending hours and hours investigating some kid for a joint, at the end of the day, they are just not left with the resources to prevent, investigate, and bring to justice incidences of the use of illegitimate force or fraud.
Anyways, that's my rant for the night. But before I go, let me urge those of you that have joined a political party to brainwash yourself! That's right, clear out of your mind all of the pre-drawn conclusions, and beginning at first principles, get yourself a home-grown worldview. The most important thing a human being can do is to think for him- or herself!
