I found this worthy essay at the following site.  It is timely and should be read in conjunction with whatever opportunity arises to see the newly released movie, Atlas Shrugged.

Understanding Rand

May 4, 2011
by Hunter Baker

Christians have a deep ambivalence about Ayn Rand that probably draws as deeply from the facts of her biography as from her famous novels. When the refugee from the old Soviet Union met the Catholic William F. Buckley, she said, "You are too intelligent to believe in God." Her atheism was militant. Rand's holy symbol was the dollar sign. Ultimately, Buckley gave Whittaker Chambers the job of writing the National Review essay on Rand's famous novel Atlas Shrugged that effectively read her and the Objectivists out of the conservative movement. The review characterized Rand's message as, "To a gas chamber, go!" Chambers thought Rand's philosophy led to the extinction of the less fit.

In truth, the great Chambers (his Witness is one of the five finest books I've ever read) probably treated Rand's work unfairly. Though Rand certainly made no secret of her contempt for those unable or unwilling to engage in true exchange of economic value, she was right to tell interviewers that she was no totalitarian because of her abhorrence for the use of force. She did not believe in compulsion. Instead, she wanted a world in which a man stood or fell on his productivity. Rand saw production as the one great life affirming activity. Man does not automatically or instinctively derive his sustenance from the earth. He must labor and produce. This was Rand's bedrock and explains why she had such contempt for those who try to gain wealth through political arrangements. She saw this parasitism on every point of the economic spectrum from the beggar to the bureaucrat to the purveyor of crony corporatism.

The critical tension between Rand and Christian theology is on human worth. Christians affirm the inherent and very high value of individuals because of their creation in the image of God. Rand values human beings only for their achievements. A person who does not offer value is a leech, a "second rater."

Atlas Shrugged, the film, is well worth seeing, both because of the challenge posed by Rand's worldview and because it avoids the pedantic speech-making of the overly long novel. Rand doesn't trust her story to get her philosophy across. The novel struggles under the weight of her desire to teach. Thanks to the constraints of the film medium, we learn through the development of the characters and the plot. As a result, the tale comes through quite clearly and simply.

The story proceeds from a fascinating premise: what if the most able were to go on strike and take their gifts away from the broader society (like Lebron taking his from Cleveland!)? These talented individuals stop producing because society (in the form of government) has begun to take their contribution for granted and seeks to control the conditions under which they live, work, and create.

Government action occurs under the rubric of equity, but these people who "move the world" - as one conversation in the film expresses - do not understand what claim the government has to order their lives or to confiscate the fruits of their labor. The villains of the piece are not so much any welfare class as much as corporatists who want to link their companies to government arrangements so as to assure profit without the need for strong performance. They go on about loyalty and public service, but it is a mask for mediocrity and greed. The heroes (Hank Rearden and Dagny Taggert) want to make money, but they are virtuous because they give obvious value for every cent they earn.

The underlying moral is that we must not make too great a claim to control the inventors and entrepreneurs lest we frustrate them into inactivity. Though we think we gain by taxing and regulating their efforts, there is a strong possibility that we will lose a great deal more by blocking the creative impulse and inspiring a parasitic ethic of entitlement.

Rand's atheism, materialism, and reduction of the human being's value to economic productivity are all severely problematic for a variety of good reasons. But one might compare her political and economic thought to chemotherapy, which is basically a form of poison designed to achieve a positive outcome. You don't want to take it if you can avoid it. You hope the circumstances in which you would use it don't arise. However, in an age of statism, it is a message that may need to be heard. Not so much in the hopes that it will prevail as much as to see it arrest movement in a particular direction which will end badly if it continues

What is the best argument to not raise the current debt ceiling?

Is it because we cannot afford to pay it back and the money we have spent so far has a track record of being practically wasted at the publics expense?  Or rather that it would send a signal to world markets that we are serious about fixing our budget problem and in doing so would strengthen the dollar immediately and send a strong signal to investors?

What is the best reason to audit the Federal Reserve?

Is it because they have more money to spend than our entire Congress, or the whole world and are not accountable to anyone and that is why they get away with bailing out foreign banks while our businesses are trying to cope with an economic downturn?  Or is it simply a matter of transparency and having an open honest money supply?

What is the best reason to end our military empire spending?

Is it because we use our tax dollars to protect large special interest corporations, picking winners and losers based on their special interests instead of the market place?  With all the money we have spent on protecting oil interests we could have instead just bought the oil from the countries for a lot cheaper and not have had such expenses and loss of liberties and rule of laws.  There still would have been competition and the prices would probably be cheaper with a lot of money saved.

What is the best reason to end the war on drugs?

Is it because we as individuals, as long as we dont harm others - have a right to make personal decisions about our own welfare and existence?  Or is it because there is a cost benefit ratio that doesnt add up and we are throwing our money and resources and liberties down a bottomless pit with no end, with lives lost, money wasted and the highest incarceration rate in the entire world?

Should we defend the Bill of Rights and Constitution and the rule of law?

Because we believe in the legitimacy of the struggles of those before, and lessons learned and because we have understanding and compassion?  Or should we defend natural rights and liberty and truth and enlightenment because it produces the most creativity and happiness and new ideas and prosperity?

Should we keep the status quo or try something different?

Lest we expect different results, is it in the public interest or is it in the special interests to keep the status quo?  Does our standard of living also include our civil liberties and does that also have a practical economic impact?  Whose interest is it to spend trillions overseas or to bailout foreign (or even domestic) banks, or to have most US dollars spent by the Fed and not Congress, to imprison millions for non-violent drug use, to keep hemp illegal, to pick winners and losers based on insider politics and hinder competition for small business, unfair trade agreements, and to pick winners and losers in other businesses like the military industrial complex, agri business and medicine and to have new medications have to go through an overburdance of obstacles?

Should people vote for someone who promises the world and delivers the opposite or someone who promises the Constitution, the rule of law and to be as truthful as one can bring themselves to be?

Democrats and Republicans both want to promise everything whether it be an empire or social services or to run your life however neither tell the truth when it comes to actual policy, laws are passed without debate, before anyone can read them and are littered with special interests and who knows what else they are signing on to - in our names; before we can even agree what type of system to have next as far as medicine or monetary policy - our current policy needs to be exposed and held accountable, before we start accusing whats legal under the "general welfare" meaning it might be a good idea to examine what we have been delivered, and what some are actually defending in the first place, the idea of libertarianism might be an ideal but so is what some think that we have now as a system of sustainability - how long can we steal from the future before it catches up with us?  Could we agree not to cut any domestic programs at least before international ones are cut first?  Can there be an agreement or coalition built on the order of cutting the budget and does that matter? Would you rather vote for someone you like but not agree with in all issues but will make a serious impact on issues you care about or someone who promises you everything but results in a loss across the board?

Should we have open, transparent government because it's more practical by having accountability & people who want to serve instead of use their power or because on principle we the people are the government and are responsible for ourselves?

Do we still believe that the best ideas come with the most information, or do we just trust what others say without any oversight or track record; how would we apply this to daily life?  Do whistleblowers deserve to be treated as heroes in some cases and is it because of their bravery, example and principle that we pursue as much information to get to the truth as possible?  Can we have debates where everyone seeks the truth and listens, and have logic decide and let the arguments stand and be able to have ideas be free and be stronger for it?

Does sacrificing liberty make us more secure or less secure?  Isn't preserving liberty the whole reason why we fight or would fight in the first place - to either preserve our liberty or because someone else wants to take it away from someone else?  Isnt sacrificing liberty for safety a decision based on fear - so to say I am going to get rid of my liberty before you do so you cant do it to me because I have already done it to myself?

Should our foreign policy be based on what some call strategic chess where the right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing?   Or should it be honest and able to adapt because it's flexible and everyone can participate and brainstorm and has a natural genuine interest getting the best ideas out before any potential adversary would be able to respond, in other words instead of strategic chess maybe 3 dimensional football where we show the playbook and run it down the middle and open it up for the passing game and have a defence that scores touchdowns.

If all that was to be accomplished in 4 years was to end the wars/empire, end the drug war, restore our Constitution, end corporate welfare and some trade deals, have a more transparent and publicly accountable money supply, and making headway on some common cause issues like industrial hemp, and reduce the debt more than expected - would that be worth it?  Is this hard to sell?  Would this be enough in our current state of the union to win an election, and wouldnt this be in most of our best interests?

I had been considering for some time the issue of crime and punishment in the tutelary fascist state when I stumbled across the following fascinating account.  This account of an individual anarchist speaks mountains about aspiration, motivation, punishment, and submission in the statist society. Every aspect of this account is troubling.

In my estimation this personal account will generally reflect the condition of our culture at the end of the progressive road.  Far from eventuating in an Utopian state, the progressive era will end in near universal disaffection, unemployment, penury, and squalor.  The end of the progressive road is just the sort of hell from which there may be no redemption.

For the statist the fundamental existential truth of the universe is the punishment of man into submission.  This is so contrary to natural law that there will be increasing numbers of those who chafe and rebel until the state collapses of its own weight....but this may happen with only the passing of centuries.

The goal of the state is not retribution alone, but the destruction of the human soul.  It is about purging everything that may be said to be individual.  We might ask ourselves if this account is not reminiscent in some respects of that last chapter of Democracy in America, and the entire culture of Orwell's 1984.

Nazi Mythologies of the Hidden Wealth of the Destitute   by  PK

The typical anti-Semite, take a 1930s Nazi for example, was told as a child, and told again, that any Jew, no matter how impoverished the Jew seemed, had a hoard of gold somewhere nearby. Naturally, if a Jew has gold, why then that gold doesn't belong to the Jew, but to the Nazi who'll take it from him: right? So: the Nazi is within his rights, the Nazi is obliged, to find the gold: and liberate it: from the enemy of God, and transferring it to the friend of God. Right? Therefore, it's perfectly reasonable to beat the Jew and torture the Jew: and if the Jew dies before giving up the gold, well that just proves how wicked the Jew is! Doesn't it? !

Any extortionist racket may work similarly. The king wants to wage a war. Why just tax the peasants! The peasants say they'd given all they could last year. But the peasants must be lying, right? It's in the nature of peasants to lie; while it's in the nature of the extortionist rulers to be the chosen of God, right? So it's just right and proper that the government burn, torture, and kill the wicked peasants until they cough up enough new taxes to invade Lorraine, or France, or Poland ...

I've lived my life without an income. I gave up the jobs of my youth, the jobs that kept me flush with cash, and went into hock, stayed in hock, in order to attend, as I was told to do, school after school: AB, MA, doctoral work, lots and lots of doctoral work. But I never got a regular job. On the contrary, though I was hired as a college teacher, I was fired, and blackballed from further employment during the kleptocracy's hysteria of the late 1960s. That's the circumstance in which I offered a cheap low-tech internet in 1970: I wanted to loosen the universities' strangle hold on the culture. My offer received a trickle of support: then that trickle was stopped (and mopped) not by accident: just another friendly service from our utterly dishonest institutions: universities, government, media ... Fortune 500, big science ... I did this and that to stay alive: I wrote my stories and my novels and still talked about Jesus-inspired Illichian social networking, all to no avail, gaining no income. And all my glorious cash reserves of high school had been long-since depleted by college. Spend all, and never gain: except from patrons. My patrons, all modest, kept me alive, though less than functional. When PCs came along I was among the last to be able to get one: I, who had proposed public software for everyone, so no one would need a PC! (The local FLEX, like a local library, could have done the code, the machine talk, for you.)

In 2006, when the estate of my patron of 1990 to 2004 was all but spent, I wrote a satire to my university, the last university to take all my money while seeing that I got none back. I did what I do in writing to all institutions that never understand a thing I do or say: I pretended that communication with them was possible. I pretended that they had understood me all along, that they knew perfectly well who I was, and that they were just pretending not to understand. I pretended to be like them: commanding, in charge, with rights. I pretended to be hold them accountable for their crimes! Imagine a lone Jew addressing Hitler as though anything could be discussed with him! I told my university that rock bottom was coming up at me fast: and that if it hit me in the face before I'd heard understanding from them, if I went stone broke while the bully who'd robbed me remained flush, and silent, then I, Christian, pacifist pk, was going to come to NY, murdering my way north along the highways, till I arrived at NYU where I would introduce the deschooler's Judgment. They read it "literally"! That is to say: they don't know how to read: which is exactly what I'd been telling them, without understanding, since 1962!

NYU called the FBI. The FBI, illiterate peers to the tenured English professors, arrested me. And ever since the fed has been extorting money from me: Where, you miserable terrorist swine, is your pile of gold?!

Well, my satire didn't get the hoped for effect - understanding, responsibility - but it did solve my terminal poverty problem. The jail fed me, provided me with a bunk. The medical facilities were lethal, as well as tardy, but they were an improvement over none, and never. Out of jail, "early" - since I was tortured into "confessing" my guilt, the fed keeps my nose just above water. I get $500 a month and food-stamps, and Medicaid as well as Medicare, and pharmaceutical co-payments. As long as I have no emergencies, no car repairs, I can just breathe. !

But now the fed want to collect the fine the judge levied against me. I'd said, Help! They arrested me. I'd said,You're bastards, and I'm insulting you the worst I can by pretending, obviously falsely, that I'm just like you: a murderer, a terrorist, a liar, an extortionist ... a coercionist, a kleptocrat! All the fed gets is, He's got a pile of gold somewhere, and we must get it from him!

I said to my parole officer, I have nothing now that the fed doesn't give me. The fed and the state figure I can live on roughly $700 a month: and I can, I do: just barely. But now the fed wants me to pay $100 per count of the six felony counts you tortured me into confessing to. Fine, give me another $600, and I'll give it right back. Now the fed wants to fine me $4,000. I said I have nothing, I'm rapidly getting down to nothing, so the fed figures I can easily afford $4,000 out of the government's dole of $700 a month. Give me the extra $4,000 and I'll give it right back. Say I can pay it $25 a month: Fine. Give me $725 a month and I'll give you $25 a month.

No. They want a payment plan. I gave them one! They don't listen! They're incapable of understanding! They don't understand what Jesus or Confucius or Buddha or Einstein .... or I have said to them. They just want the gold. And they just know - they bet my life! - that I have it buried somewhere.

You gotta see this! I almost didn't, after those bum reviews in the lame-stream media; besides, theatre showing it is 95 mi away. Well worth the drive! I was blown away by the acting, cinematography, score, Ayn Rand's intricate plot, everything. I might have found the characters implausible, were it not for the fact that I’ve known business people like that. Joe Mulach (Kay’s dad) was one: the kind of guy whose handshake was as bankable as any lawyer’s verbose contract.

Now, I’m well aware that not ALL of my friends and relatives are libertarians, much less Objectivists, but I truly think this film is worth a look by everyone. Unlike “Hop”, which will do boffo b.o. (as they say in Hollywood), this one won’t gross a lot but it will stimulate much thought and discussion for a long time, like Rand’s book has done during the 50-plus years since its publication. (It has sold nearly 7 million copies altogether.) Memo to scoffers: yes, this stuff is candy for libertarians--but try it yourself, if you think you can resist getting hooked!
