If our country is such a 50/50 split, why haven't we just drawn a line in the sand and created a "Democratic States of America" and "Liberty States of America" - the DSA can be a democracy/big-govt society and the LSA can be a libertarian/free-market society. Lets see who prospers more?
Or, perhaps, we only think we're a 50/50 split because thats what we're told by the fringes. A Zogby survey (scroll down to "How Libertarian See Themselves") showed that, when asked "Would you describe yourself as fiscally conservative and socially liberal" 59% of voters said "Yes". Thats a majority of polled voters that, to some degree, have libertarian views. And why not? Thats a natural/human stance - treat others as you wish to be treated. Or, don't tell me what to do and I won't tell you what to do.
So 60% of American voters would likely warm-up to Libertarian ideals. Yet we're told continuously that the country is split 50/50 between progressive socialists and neo-conservatives. No - its actually 60/20/20. That's what scares the status quo - look at what happened in NY-23.
That's why Ron Paul is loved by so many. He is as close to the embodiment of libertarian ideals as you can get in politics today. And people are refreshed to see that they aren't alone. Soon they see that their neighbors feel the same way. Maybe this liberty thing has a chance. Maybe, just maybe, we can change the country for the better. Maybe we won't have government that tells us what we can and can't do to our own bodies, minds, or property. Maybe we won't have government that will control what we can and can't purchase, or how much it costs. Maybe we won't have government that will forcefully take a large percentage of our productive capacity through ridiculous taxes. Maybe, just maybe, we'll have a truly free society. But, it will only happen if we make it happen.
