Republicans have once again shown how paper thin their commitment to small government is. All but 12 house republicans voted to extend unemployment benefits to 99 weeks on November fifth, including all Illinois house republicans such as IL-13's Judy Biggert. Ninety-nine weeks.
The government, with the full support of "small-government" republicans, has decided that they are going to support low-income living almost indefinitely. As solid economic thought teaches, when the government gives people the opportunity to be paid for nearly 2 years of unemployment, you're going to get growing unemployment numbers.
The fact is, we cannot afford this. It is a shame that so many people who want to work simply cannot find a job. But democrats and republicans alike should place the blame for this right where it belongs: on the federal government. They created this massive recession. The only way for us to recover is a return to free-market principles, a dismantling of the warfare/welfare state, and a full scale audit of the Federal Reserve (which 70% of American's support).
One of the most important factors of a capitalist society is our willingness to let people fail and realize that government cannot and should not take care of everyone, cradle to grave. If we would stop bailing people out and remove the regulations that caused our current problem, we could liquidate the bad debt and start on a sustainable path for recovery. Would it be a rough period? Absolutely. But it is necessary if we want to really recover and remain a free and prosperous state instead of a European-socialist state. In the end, we would emerge stronger and with a greater understanding of the terrible things that can happen when the government, whether democratic or republican, gets in the way of the market.

The following was published in the Daily Herald.
In a recent letter to her constituents, U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert explained that she voted for the expansion of the cash for clunkers program. This is further proof that we have a representative in the 13th district with little to no knowledge of how a healthy economy works, and furthermore that her commitment to the principles of small government is paper thin at best.
Biggert claims in her letter that the stimulus program is not working because the money is sitting idle because the government hasn't figured out a way to spend it and probably wont spend it until the recession is well over. This statement is amazingly contradictory, considering Biggert and much of the Republican Party are quick to attack President Obama for spending us into oblivion with his health care bill.
However, if Rep. Biggert really feels that more spending can solve this recession, then I propose that she take the cash for clunkers program to the next logical step. If more spending is all we need, then a $4,500 rebate is clearly not enough. If we can spend our way to prosperity, then she should immediately introduce legislation to buy every American a new green car. This increase will surely stimulate the economy if spending is all we need.
What Ms. Biggert does not acknowledge is that this recession is a result of the prior stimuli of the Congress that she has served in. Easy credit and reckless spending were a drug to our economy, and Ms. Biggert, members of congress, and the Federal Reserve were the enablers. The solution to our economic woes is increase in savings, not more government stimulus to buy more things we don't need. Such reckless action will only lengthen the recession. Biggert, along with most of our Congress, need to be sent packing.
