Obama now targeting recreational fishing?
Seriously? Is there not one area left in which this adminstration is not willing to make people angry?
Via ESPN:
The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing some of the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters....
And just take a guess on how plans are being made to implement this...
Consequently, unless anglers speak up and convince their Congressional representatives to stop this bureaucratic freight train, it appears that the task force will issue a final report for "marine spatial planning" by late March, with President Barack Obama then issuing an Executive Order to implement its recommendations - whatever they may be....

martincory Canton, GA | After reading everything that is going on these days and then the revelation by Eric Massa that every elected official in Congress spends 5 to 7 hours a day making outbound calls begging for contributions, equipped with money per hour score cards and talking points. Its time to simply ignore the Federal Government. We the People have the authority to do so under our Constitution and Congress can pass no laws that supersede this authority. We are being ruled by unlawful laws passed by individuals whom break their sworn oath and commit treason on a daily basis. |

hadenough Papalote, TX | A license is permission to do something that would other wise be illegal. Sport or recreational fishing is not only illegal but immoral as well. Catching fish for personal use food needs no license or permission and can not be prohibited because the can not be a law against gathering food for personal use. Thinks about it! |

LizLiz Brooklyn, NY | ^That is the point! They don't want us to be independent and capable of taking care of ourselves. Forbid someone feeds from a food supply that is not of the iron grasp of Monsanto or Unilever, Proctor & Gamble etc. |

BruceKoerber Cedar Rapids, IA | It is just another form of taxation, what do you expect from the fiscally irresponsible political class? |

mastiff Clinton, CT | While individuals should not be prohibited from fishing where & when they want, there is a real over-fishing crisis occurring that is not being addressed. I did not read the article here in question, but, commercial fishing practices around the world are troublesome and damaging to ecosystems. Frankly, I am all for more sustainable fishing practices, even if it requires government regulation. This may be contradictory to my Libertarian beliefs but I also feel strongly about the loss of our natural food supply.

On what basis is your judgment made that sport or recreational fishing is immoral?
The observational facts are that it is commercial fishing which depletes resources. In fact, if it were not for the limitations (seasons, net sizes, limits) already in place commercial fishing would have entirely depleted the world's oceans long ago.
Regulation of sportfishing is ordinarily supported by recreational and sportfishermen who are the most concerned about the preservation of the resource, rather than its total depletion for profit. If it were not for these groups there would be no fish to catch by a person just seeking some for lunch.
In central Florida, it is snowbirds who come to our state to catch and eat panfish who deplete the resource. They go out and catch hundreds of fish, filet them and freeze them...then they take them back north to eat over the next several months. Sport and recreational fisherman frown on this activity and agitate for stricter possession limits.
Fish are a part of the commons as understood by Locke. The only moral impairments would be fishing to the destruction of the common resource or beyond the use and purpose of any person so engaged. |
