How can we make a coalition work?

[Newer: Some guides to the Texas 2009 Constitutional Amendments ] [Older: Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson signed on today! (Audit the Fed)]

I attended a coalition meeting last night where Republicans, Libertarians and somewhat independent leaders came together.  We introduced ourselves and discussed ways we can work together.

The saddest thing was the party loyalists who said they wouldn't support the Libertarian in the general election if the bad Republican won the primary.  They would still support the bad Republican, just because they had an R next to their name.  Which is what they have been doing for too many years and it's been ruining the country AND the party.

How can they in good conscience put the PARTY before the COUNTRY?    Or put the PARTY before PRINCIPLES?

Fortunately they aren't ALL like that, but the ones who run the clubs and counties for the most part STILL think that way.

ARGHHH.  We must continue to be voices of reason in this insane world.

Incurably optimistic,

Debbie McKee

This is human nature, and politics, we are dealing with. What is their motivation for supporting a Lib candidate if the Big R person is not one they like?
1.) Their party hacks will disown them for not being loyal, and they will be ostracized.
2.) The road to victory will be harder since our schools and media have indoctrinated everyone into believing that politics is a two party system.
3.) You will not have as many people out there helping you at election time with money and time.

If you can get a "star" candidate (someone with good local name recognition)to corssover, then you may have a shot.

Politics is about motivating people to make the decision you want them to make. Come up with some positive rewards, and a win - win for the Big R folks, of course on a local individual basis, and you have your answer. (Without some local wins under our belt to show that it can be done, we will have no cred.)
Of course, the Lib party will need to get their local folks to get out and campaign, and get their people out their (with additional folks) to campaign for these local folks. Just having their name on the ballot doesn't cut it.

L OL. See if you want this in your government?

As far as I can see; Libertarians are just to the left of anarchy; just short of radical. Most Americans; even Independents, fall much closer to Conservative points of view, in a moral sense. We are a nation of Laws; and Laws make the society in which we live.

With a 'L' by your name; you won't garner as many votes as you will with an 'I' by it. Run as an 'R' in the primary; if you lose, run as an 'I' 'Tea Party Candidate' in the general. If you are a Lib. by choice, favor the 'Don't ask, Don't tell' policy; it might save you an election.

Could not disagree more Lemmetellyathis. Today, it is considered radical to support what the Constitution says. That puts our founding fathers and many of us in that category. Radical refers to fundamental, and I certainly believe in the fundamentals of that document, although there were a few words and/or phrases that were too loose. Actually, with all of their brilliance, the writers should have been more acute by stating, "we are all created with equal rights under the natural law{or nature's laws)".
Unfortunately, many "conservatives" don't actually subscribe to the dictum that we are a nation of laws as they have no problem policing the world and fighting undeclared wars. So-called economic conservatives or social conservatives belie their principles almost daily which leaves many to wonder what the hell a "conservative" even means any more.
