To borrow from Knight Rider (and other places, but why not make an 80s reference when one gets the chance), "one man can make a difference."

Thanks to Steve Bierfeldt's courageous stand in Missouri several months ago (and in the face of an ACLU lawsuit), the TSA now has to abide by two newly declared rules:

The new rules, issued in September and October, tell officers "screening may not be conducted to detect evidence of crimes unrelated to transportation security" and that large amounts of cash don't qualify as suspicious for purposes of safety....

Although the article starts out by identifying Steve as a Paul aide, it does later correctly mention that he is Director of Development for Campaign for Liberty.  Way to go, Steve!

Most Americans are unaware that there is a technological explosion taking place that will enable the government to intrude in the lives of every citizen at an unprecedented level.  Surveillance technologies have been around for a long time, but it is only recently that storage of and rapid access to vast amounts of information has become possible.  Government can now monitor many activities that most Americans would regard as private and protected by the constitution without any real oversight process involved.  American telecommunications companies already retain detailed records of customer activities.  If you use the internet, some internet providers record every single action taken, to include individual keystrokes.

In Britain this process of corporate and government intrusion is far advanced even though it is bitterly opposed by a large part of the public.  A new law is about to go into effect with the wonderful euphemism name of the Intercept Modernization Program, part of the equally splendidly dubbed Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act.  It will require telecommunications providers to collect and retain all information on subscribers' activities for a period of six months.  Employees of 653 public agencies, most of which have no law enforcement or intelligence function, will have access to the information with no judicial oversight whatsoever.  At each agency all that is needed is a supervisor to sign off on the request for information.

In the United States, such records are maintained in a haphazard fashion by the various service providers and can be accessed by the Justice Department through the issuance of a national security letter.  The security letter is particularly dangerous from a civil liberties perspective because it does not have any judicial review and it has legal penalties for anyone who even discloses that he has received one.  The number of security letters issued each year has been growing dramatically because it is an easy way to obtain information without going through any real due process. More than 35,000 were issued last year.   In a recent case in Philadelphia, an internet service provider was asked for detailed information relating to all internet traffic on a certain date, to include IP addresses, times, e-mail addresses, physical addresses, registered accounts, Social Security Numbers, bank account numbers, and credit card numbers.  There is no sign that the Obama Justice Department and FBI will behave any differently than their counterparts under George W. Bush, quite the contrary. - Phil Giraldi, American Conservative Defense Alliance

House Democrat leadership is planning to ram its 1,900-page complete government takeover of health care through Congress with a vote this Saturday at 6 pm eastern.

But many Democrats are hesitant to support the plan after Tuesday's election results. With every passing day, they are growing more worried about facing the wrath of angry constituents back home.

You and I can take advantage of their doubts to stop the Pelosi Plan in the House, but only if we act quickly and make it clear where we stand.

Click here to get contact information for your representative and urge him to stand up for the American people by opposing the forced insurance mandate, higher taxes, and red tape contained in the Pelosi Plan.

And if the vote takes place Saturday night as scheduled, they will be in their offices all that day. So keep the calls going on Saturday!

There is a real alternative to yielding more power over our lives to Washington: implementing a plan centered on freedom, choice, and faith in the American taxpayers that they know how to spend their money better than some unelected bureaucrat.

That's why Campaign for Liberty has launched www.OperationHealthFreedom.com.

This new website highlights our Health Freedom Plan, features videos from Judge Napolitano, Rand Paul, Peter Schiff, and more, and gives you contact information for your representative, along with a sample letter to Congress.

The same government that has piled up trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is not going to fix our health care system with more intervention.

It's time to send Congress a clear message: get out of our health care!

Update: Current reports indicate the vote could be moved to early next week! The pressure is working!  Keep those calls going.

Operation Health Freedom Website Launched

Washington, D.C., November 5, 2009 - Today, House Republicans are holding a press conference in front of a rallying crowd to oppose the Democrat's health reform plan introduced late last week. Campaign for Liberty, which announced its support for an alternative to the Democrat health reform plan last week as well, is also launching a new project and website to promote its proposal.

The project, Operation Health Freedom (http://www.OperationHealthFreedom.com), boasts a site which gives visitors information on the legislation and on how to contact their representatives in Congress to urge them to support this alternative health reform package.

"Campaign for Liberty is proposing that Congress try passing legislation that promotes true health freedom," said John Tate, President of Campaign for Liberty. "The same government that has given us trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is not going to fix our health care system with this latest bureaucratic scheme. It's time to vote health freedom."

The Operation Health Freedom package includes legislation introduced by Congressman Ron Paul. The cornerstone of the package is H.R. 1495, the Comprehensive Health Care Reform Act of 2009, which provides all Americans with a tax credit for 100% of health care expenses, a tax credit for premiums for high-deductible insurance policies connected with a Health Savings Account (HSA), and allows seniors to use funds in an HSA to pay for a medigap policy.  In addition, it makes all medical expenses tax deductible.

Also included are H.R. 2629, a bill that prevents the government from requiring people to purchase health insurance, and H.R. 3217, introduced by Congressman John Shadegg, which permits the purchase of health insurance across state lines and will ultimately lower costs due to the resulting competition.

For years, the tenth was far and away my favorite amendment in the Bill of Rights. It is still the most significant in considering the limits of federal power, since it, along with the ninth, pretty much implies all the limits on federal power spelled out in amendments one through eight. It is good to see conservatives rediscover this amendment, and let's hope they continue to care about it when Republicans retake the White House and Congress. An inconsistent defense of federalism is hardly better than no defense at all. Cal Thomas writes:

Does the U.S. Constitution stand for anything in an era of government excess? Can that founding document, which is supposed to restrain the power and reach of a centralized federal government, slow down the juggernaut of czars, health insurance overhaul and anything else this administration and Congress wish to do that is not in the Constitution?

Democrats Unveil Health Reform Plan, C4L Has the Alternative

Washington, D.C. October 29, 2009 - Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats announced their health insurance reform bill. The unveiling was followed by a call for a vote on the legislation next week.

"We believe the Democrat's health insurance proposal is far from the answer to reforming health care for the better," said John Tate, President of Campaign for Liberty. "Their bill forces people to purchase health insurance, increases premiums, and creates a public option that will eventually go the way of other bankrupt government-run programs."

"Campaign for Liberty is proposing that Congress try passing legislation that promotes true health freedom," continued Tate.

Tate went on to propose an alternative package, which includes legislation introduced by Congressman Ron Paul. The cornerstone of the package is H.R. 1495, the Comprehensive Health Care Reform Act of 2009, which provides all Americans with a tax credit for 100% of health care expenses, a tax credit for premiums for high-deductible insurance policies connected with a Health Savings Account (HSA), and allows seniors to use funds in an HSA to pay for a medigap policy, as well as making all medical expenses tax deductible.

Also included are H.R. 2629, a bill that prevents the government from requiring people purchase health insurance, and H.R. 3217, introduced by Congressman John Shadegg, which permits the purchase of health insurance across state lines and will ultimately lower costs due to the resulting competition.

Tate continued, "The same government that has given us trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is not going to fix our health care system with this latest bureaucratic scheme. It's time to vote health freedom."

Campaign for Liberty believes it is time to reform the way health care is delivered in America. Years of ruinous government intervention, excessive regulation, and corporatism have damaged the patient-doctor relationship and driven up consumer costs.

The solution to our health care dilemma will not come from some grand scheme concocted by the same people who ran our economy into the ground and who continue to accumulate trillions of dollars in debt.

It will come from choosing freedom by ending government meddling in health care, protecting patient privacy, returning more of our hard-earned tax dollars to us, and ensuring the federal government does not block any information about alternative treatments.

Congressman Ron Paul, an OB-GYN who has delivered more than 4,000 babies, has introduced several pieces of legislation in Congress to bring true change to health care and to protect the American people from further government intrusion.

H.R. 2629, the Coercion is Not Health Care Act, stops government from taking even more of our money and railroading us into its health care scheme by preventing any individual or agency in the federal government from requiring anyone to purchase health insurance. H.R. 2629 also prohibits conditioning the receipt of any government benefit or participation in any government program on the purchase or maintenance of health insurance.

H.R. 1495, the Comprehensive Health Care Reform Act of 2009, allows all Americans to pay their health care bills through the method that suits them best by providing all Americans with a tax credit for 100% of health care expenses (fully refundable against both income and payroll taxes), allowing individuals to roll over unused amounts in cafeteria plans and Flexible Savings Accounts (FSA), providing a tax credit for premiums for a high-deductible insurance policy connected with a Health Savings Account (HSA) and allowing seniors to use funds in an HSA to pay for a medigap policy, as well as making all medical expenses tax deductible by repealing the 7.5% threshold for the deduction of medical expenses.

H.R. 1498, the Freedom from Unnecessary Litigation Act of 2009, addresses rising medical malpractice costs by providing a tax credit for negative outcomes insurance purchased prior to medical treatment and by preventing medical malpractice awards obtained through binding arbitration from being taxed.

As Dr. Paul said in his speech introducing H.R. 1498, "Relying on negative outcomes insurance instead of litigation will also reduce the costs imposed on physicians, other health care providers, and hospitals by malpractice litigation."

H.R. 2630, the Protect Patients and Physicians Privacy Act, allows patients and physicians to opt-out of any government-mandated or -funded system of electronic health care records and repeals the federal law creating an "unique patient identifier." It also denies the use of federal funds to advance the use of standard unique health identifiers in any federal, state, or private health care plan.

H.R. 3394, the Freedom of Health Speech Act, requires the FTC to actually prove health care claims are false before preventing those claims from being made, and H.R. 3395, the Health Freedom Act, ends the FDA's attempts to censure truthful health claims.

These are just a few of steps Congressman Paul has taken in Congress to address the health care crisis.

Click here to get contact information for your representatives and urge them to support Dr. Paul's health care reform legislation.

And be sure to visit Dr. Paul's congressional website, where you can get information on all the legislation he has sponsored and cosponsored in the current Congress and several previous ones, read his speeches introducing his legislation and remarking on other efforts, and learn more about his work to restore respect for the Constitution in Washington.

The federal government has meddled in our health care affairs long enough. It's time to choose freedom.

It's time to make sure Americans can receive efficient, effective health care by unleashing the power of the free market.

The White House has declared Swine Flu a "naitonal emergency." In the last year, at least 5,000 have died worldwide from H1N1, according to the WHO, making this an "epidemic." Contrast this with the 250,000 to 500,000 — 50 to 100 times as many — who died of the regular flu. Then consider that the great majority of swine flu diagnoses in the last year turned out not to be the flu at all.

The real national emergency is the threat to our liberty. When the president declares a "national emergency," he typically martials the heavy hand of the state in ways unseen when there is no "crisis." Today we have so many "crises" — terrorism, economic collapse, health care, global warming and now swine flu — that no area of our lives is safe from government meddling. This particular "emergency" could lead to despotism: Mandatory vaccinations, quarantines, government control of transportation and so forth.

Be on the lookout in the next couple days for a new piece by Dr. Adam Murdock on swine flu hysteria in our featured articles section.

For far too long, the Republican Party has been controlled by the "neoconservatives," those who readily abandon the free market at the drop of a hat if it means expanding government power and who think the United States should be the policeman of the world. They want us to support those who throw substance and principle to the wind in favor of political expediency.

Last Monday night, Senator Lindsey Graham reiterated his disdain for Ron Paul and limited government conservatives at a town hall when he said that he was not going to allow the Republican Party to be "hijacked by Ron Paul."

Instead, he thinks we should get behind those who he tells us "can win," even if it means abandoning every belief we hold dear in the process.

In addition to his afternoon appearance on Judge Napolitano's Freedom Watch, Congressman Paul will be responding to the neoconservatives on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer tonight at 6 pm eastern and also on MSNBC's The Ed Show at 6:30 pm eastern.

CNN has shared with my staff that they want to hear from you on this issue. Contact The Situation Room and let them know you think neoconservatism has had its day and it is time for our elected officials to stick to the Constitution.

In our efforts over the past two years, we have made it clear we will no longer be silent while those who claim to believe in limited government and freedom behave exactly the opposite and help run our country into the ground.

The freedom movement is growing larger every day, and we will take our country back without abandoning our principles to do so.

Socialized medicine.  Wonderful for bureaucrats, but neither patients nor providers.

The Daily Mail gives yet another horror story from Great Britain:

Ambulance staff battling to save a nine-year-old car crash victim were told the nearest back-up crew could not help as they were on their lunch break.

Bethany Dibbs was struck by a car as she crossed the road on her scooter and ended up in a coma with a fractured skull.

An ambulance crew arrived and called for help, only to be told by their operator that under strict meal break regulations the closest additional crew still had a few minutes left on their lunch break.

Bethany Dibbs

Bethany Dibbs, nine, from Poole in Dorset suffered a fractured skull and slipped into a coma after a car accident

The paramedics were informed it would take 20 minutes for another crew to arrive.

In the end one of them called their colleagues directly and they abandoned their lunch and raced to help.

They arrived only five minutes after the original crew and took Bethany to hospital.

An ambulance worker, who asked not be named, said: 'There isn't one staff member who would not go, but we have to be given two 30-minute meal breaks and can't be interrupted. It's a joke.'

It is imperative that Americans resist those who would nationalize the American medical system.

You'd think Uncle Sam was awash in cash, rather than broke.  The government continues to spend money wildly on most anything.  Consider this report from Stars and Stripes:

The Pentagon is spending more than $100 million to build new military bases in Bulgaria and Romania, even as the Obama administration recently scrapped plans for a missile-defense shield in other parts of Eastern Europe.

Last month, the White House announced it no longer planned to base U.S. missiles and troops in Poland and the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 U.S. troops - including two squadrons from the Vilseck, Germany-based 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment - were taking part in exercises in nearby Romania and Bulgaria.

The exercises, which began in late June, will run until the end of October.

Col. Gary Russ, commander of Joint Task Force-East, said nobody in Romania or Bulgaria has challenged what the U.S. is doing in those countries since the missile defense plan was scrapped.

"We have made commitments and they have never made any overt conversation along the lines of pulling out of JTF-East," said Russ, who leads the largest U.S. military contingent operating in Eastern Europe. "I think both of these [bases] illustrate great commitment [to Eastern Europe]."

Part of that commitment comes in the form of a $50 million military base in Romania that could house 1,600 U.S. troops, and another $60 million facility for 2,500 troops in Bulgaria. Construction on the Romanian base is expected to be completed in the next two months, while the Bulgarian base is expected to open in 2011 or 2012.

Why is the U.S. building unnecessary facilities in countries which the U.S. has no need to defend?  Is there anything for which the American people are not expected to pay?

How do I know? Well, the government wants to issue "bonus checks" to Social Security recipients. The rationale is times are tough and people need more help. But what about the fact that there's been mild price deflation? And why should only those on the government dole get relief? Welfare expands, government salaries and payrolls increase, the taxpayer is milked more as the debt balloons. This is all unsustainable.

As for Social Security in particular, some wish to save the program by "privatizing" it -- mandating that young people invest in the market while still paying, one way or another, for retirees' benefits. This would be a disaster, and with the economic collapse, the nominally pro-market Bush Social Security plan, had it been enacted, might have discredited markets for a generation. Instead, we will see the entitlement state collapse sooner or later, and then it will be the federal government that's discredited.

I don't want to see it happen that way, however. So here's a decent transition plan: Pay for current retirees out of the general fund and end the payroll tax immediately. That's at least honest accounting. In a few decades, the program will be gone, without having to have thrown anyone out on the street, and without propping up an unconstitutional, uneconomical and grossly immoral system through a series of gimmicks that fails to restore liberty to anyone. We could also means-test benefits and offer a trade to seniors: Give up your social security checks and never have to pay federal taxes again. That would shrink the welfare state, rather than prolong it with a corporatized gloss.

Meanwhile, as there will be no cost of living adjustments, as Jesse notes, despite a real increase in the true cost of living, the answer is the same as it is for protecting all those with fixed incomes: End the Fed, or at least stop printing money, which effectively robs from the poor and those with fixed incomes to give to the state and its cronies.

Ron Paul has a bestseller. That sounds so nice I'll say it twice. Ron Paul has a bestseller. His new book, End the Fed, is number 30 on Amazon as this is written -- with 167 mostly glowing reviews -- and his reception last week on Jon Stewart's Daily Show was hugely positive. Stewart, more-or-less a left/libertarian, clearly sees Paul as one of the good guys, and his audience seems to agree.

With all these doors suddenly slamming open, it's easy to forget that just a couple of years ago Ron Paul was an obscure, eccentric Texas congressman whose presidential run was met with a yawn in the mainstream media. But when he stood up in the debates and made the case for limited government, sound money, and adherence to the Constitution, he struck a chord. It was clear (to libertarians at least) that he was telling the truth and that the political hacks who were treating him like a deranged uncle were the ones with the vision/character problem.

Paul didn't win many votes (though out here in Idaho he did get 24% in the Republican primary) but he made an impression. And when pretty much everything he warned us about came true -- while virtually everything the hacks of both parties said turned out to be disastrously wrong -- he even gained a bit of mainstream cred. So when he introduced HR 1207 to audit the Fed, the response was at first respectful, and then enthusiastic. Instead of instantly dismissing him, people began asking their representatives why the Fed isn't already audited. This law might just pass, with unpredictable but almost certainly amusing results.

But of course auditing the Fed is just the beginning. Paul's ultimate goal is to eliminate the whole institution, along with other golems like fiat currency and fractional reserve banking, and to reinstitute sound, honest money and limited government.

For those new to this subject, End the Fed is a clearly written primer on how dangerous delusions like unsound money and expanding government have gradually become the unquestioned conventional wisdom. For more seasoned gold bugs the book provides some interesting history, along with plenty of useful debate ammunition.

Some of the high points:

Paul makes it clear that the Fed isn't the whole problem. It's just one part of a system that first went wrong with the introduction of fractional reserve banking centuries ago (banks used to be warehouses, storing depositors' money for a fee), followed by the spread of European central banks (really just scams to allow a few elite bankers and politicians to expand their own power at the expense of everyone else) and then, finally, the introduction of fiat currency, which freed governments to expand spending and borrowing without regard to, well, anything. The problem, in short, is the whole of modern banking and finance.

The middle part of the book features transcripts of Congressman Paul grilling Fed chairmen Greenspan and Bernanke. Some of these transcripts date back to the early Reagan era, which means that for going on three decades Paul has been fighting this fight, and slamming into the same brick wall. The Chairmen feel no need to explain themselves to a lowly congressman, and respond with a mixture of lies andobfuscation that apparently fooled most of Washington. The generally-respectful Paul even refers to Greenspan as "pathetic" after oneespecially dishonest piece of testimony. Less charitable readers will, by the end of this section, want to take a congressional microphone and beat Greenspan and Bernanke senseless.

Fractional reserve banking and fiat currency make war easier. Back when a ruler needed actual gold to field an army, invading a neighbor required some serious forethought. But once a dictator (or the world's policeman) could just print a few billion pieces ofpaperand order some new tanks, "defending the national interest" got a whole lot easier. Hence the bloodbath of the 20th century, and perhaps the mess of the coming decade.

Paul knows all the major sound money/Austrian economics classics, and he cites them liberally. The "recommended reading" list contains a year's worth of serious research.

Though he continues to fight, he's not optimistic about averting the coming train wreck, which he refers to as the "BIG ONE".

Anyhow, good book from a great man. Stay healthy, Dr. Paul, your journey into the mainstream has just begun.

My comments on another forum on health care and the role government takes in protecting consumers. The text written by the other person I am indenting in the quote boxes.

You bet healthcare is a HUMAN right. I feel sorry for those who put enterprise /money before mankind. And in terms of the Declaration of Independence... Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness... hard to acheive when being exploited by insurance companies... or lack of funds prevent medical treatment...

Do we agree that a right is something to which one is entitled, something which is inherently possessed? You have a natural right to your own life (no one can legitimately kill you), your liberty (no one can enslave you), and your property (no one can steal what you have labored to produce or purchase). If we agree on this, then health care cannot be a right, because health care must be produced by someone.

If a doctor removes a tumor from your lung, his time and talents must be employed to perform the operation. If the patient has a right to that operation, then it is in violation of the doctor's right to liberty and property (his time and talents) and (s)he is essentially a slave to the patient. Health care is not a right. It is a need. How we as a society provide for that need is the question at hand.

"And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. " - what happened there?

There is a difference between saying, 'we're all in the same boat so we all need to row together if we are to achieve independence from the Crown' and saying 'you are all entitled to the product of everyone else's labor, so start sharing'. Also, rights cannot be granted by any document; they are inherent: the fact that the Constitution and other founding documents refer to our natural rights does not mean that the Constitution, etc., are the granters of those rights.

If you so dearly heed the words of the Declaration of Independence, why not then stand with us in defiance of health insurance companies' tyranny over us! Was it not tyranny that inspired the D of I? Do you not see insurance and big pharma price gouging and claim denying and the majority of bankruptcies related to huge medical bills as tyranny? Or is it the corporations inalienable right to drain the good people of this country with high premiums and prices and low payout? What about the confirmed price gouging and rebranding the same drugs to prolong their marketability? How about denying domestic abuse victims for PRE EXISTING conditions? Health insurance ONLY cares about obscene profits - not you, not me, not your family, not mine, not anyone that costs them money! WAKE UP!

People on both sides of any divisive issue are always encouraging the other side to 'wake up', both believing that they themselves are fully 'awake'. Trust me, it's not like I haven't fully considered this issue. Either one of us is wrong or we both are, and its our job to civilly talk about the issue until we can come to an agreement. That's difficult since there's a lot of money being dumped in by those with a vested interest in the outcome, and that tends to muddy the waters of civil discourse. Facts are difficult to come by, sources are biased, and statistics are skewed. On all sides.

Health care in the U.S. is expensive because of massive government intervention - the regulations, mandates, etc., that have turned our health insurance industry into a byzantine third-party payment system rife with waste and lobbyists. The big players in the field have quashed competition by pushing through thousands of regulations designed to make it difficult and expensive for new health care providers and insurers to enter the field.

Health insurance is not insurance at all. If car insurance were run the same way as health insurance, we'd be crying for national car insurance reform right now, too. You'd need a full time job to get car insurance, and the govt would require all insurance plans to cover gasoline, oil changes, and repairs. All mechanics would have to be certified by a state board and attend 4 years of school before they could turn a screwdriver. You'd have no idea how much an oil change cost, but it wouldn't matter because someone else would be paying for it. Etc.

I challenge you to put yourself in someone else's shoes and imagine what someone without the good fortune you have might have to go through to get treatment. Perhaps you can ponder having to sell your home because you can't afford it with all your medical bills. Got a comfy car? Good because you may have to live in it. And I hope you never have a catastrophic medical crisis that may threaten your good fortune as it has for more than half of our countrymen that file bankruptcy every year.

This is a common accusation of those who want to force taxpayers to pay for other people's health care, food, housing, etc. If I oppose forcible taxation for the provision of services to the poor, then that makes me selfish and lacking compassion. To the contrary, I certainly am thinking of people less fortunate than me. My desire is definitely not to trample on the downtrodden, but to help them in a way that actually helps rather than to provide for their needs in a way that makes them dependent (and slaves to the state) and destroys real charitable giving. Believe me, I care for the poor just as much as you do.

The poor (and I myself probably qualify as 'poor') should seek support from their family, friends, churches, neighbors, charities, etc. When the government provides charity or a 'safety net' for people, it completely erodes these important community connections and depersonalizes the act of asking for support and the act of giving support. This depersonalization also makes it easy to ask for help when one doesn't genuinely need it, which leads to abuse and overuse.

Additionally, the government has no real incentive to get people off the dole and back on their own, while a personal donor does. The 'War on Poverty' has been running for decades, and we still have just as many poor people even though we've spent hundreds of billions of dollars. All of the tax money needed to pay for that has a tendency to drive more people toward government support, since they have less money of their own to begin with.

I find it ironic that in the name of freedom, some defend the freedom of corporations to oppress this country. UGH! Capitalism has become an ugly beast when we are so blind as to turn our backs on humanity.

We in the United States have corporatism, not capitalism. Over the years, companies have secured special privileges for themselves from government. The very concept of incorporation violates the rights of the consumers, because the people behind the corporations obtain, through government mandate, special protections from any damages that may result from their corporation's activities. This makes it much easier for companies to screw people over because the company, rather than the people that own it, bears most of the risk.

I absolutely oppose corporatism because it is NOT freedom. We do NOT have a free market or capitalism in the United States (nor really anywhere in the world). Capitalism is the scapegoat because we have what on the surface looks like capitalism but is actually a very mixed economy.

Companies only get as big and powerful as they are because government itself allows them to be. Without the protection of the government and the regulations that stifle true competition, these companies would be quickly replaced by other companies that provided what consumers actually wanted at a lower price and without screwing people over. Ask yourself: "If all health insurance companies are evil and constantly screwing the little guy and putting profit ahead of people, then why don't I get together with some friends and start my own insurance company that is actually nice to our customers and provides a good product at a fair price? People will come in droves to buy insurance from us and we'll rule the insurance market easily."

The answer to this hypothetical question is that you can't. Because the existing insurance companies have so heavily protected themselves with government that you cannot be nice to your customers and stay afloat. If we want to solve this problem, we need LESS government, not more. Government is and will always be the tool of Big Pharma, Big Banks, Big Everything. Government is NOT ON OUR SIDE because we only have votes and the Big Guys have the money. When you vote to put the government in charge of protecting us from the companies (through regulations, mandates, etc.), the companies themselves will, in short order, buy off the politicians and regulators and stack the deck in their favor. The companies can screw us over and be protected from retaliation by the system we voted into place.

I am tired of getting screwed over; we all are. We need to (gently and quickly) dismantle the system that is allowing this to take place.

While looking through a copy of Samuel Johnson's "A Dictionary of the English Language" (published in 1755), one can find a number of interesting definitions that have broad-reaching effects on public policy. Here's two that are quite relevant these days:

General:

1. Comprehending many species or individuals; not special.
3. Not restrained by narrow or distinctive limitations
5. Public; comprising the whole

Welfare:

1. Happiness; success; prosperity

Clearly, these definitions, Constitutionally-speaking, are far different than what the politicians and pundits tell us. The "general Welfare" clause, as stated in the Tenth Amendment Center's 10-4 Pledge for the Constitution, was actually meant as a limit on power - not an excuse to expand it:

The phrase, "general Welfare," in Article I, Section 8 does not authorize Congress to enact any laws it claims are in the "general Welfare" of the United States. The phrase sets forth the requirement that all laws passed by Congress in Pursuance of the enumerated powers of the Constitution shall also be in the general Welfare of the United States. This was affirmed by James Madison when he wrote: "With respect to the words "general welfare," I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators."

Exposed: American Police Force Is A Blackwater Front Group

Exposed: American Police Force Is A Blackwater Front Group blackwater

American Police Force, the paramilitary unit patrolling a small town in Montana, has been exposed as being a front group for the disgraced private military contractor Blackwater, now called "Xe".

The American Police Force website, on a page that has swiftly been deleted but remains cached here, states that APF runs the "U.S. Training Center," which proves "a wide range of instruction and training for all types of law enforcement organizations, from basic firearms training to complex SWAT tactics," according to the website.

The Blackwater website carries on its contact page the following address, underneath the logo for U.S. Training Center.

Xe Services, LLC
PO Box 1029
Moyock, NC 27958

Xe Services LLC is the new name of Blackwater USA. In addition, the U.S. Training Center contact page carries the exact same address.

PO Box 1029
Moyock, NC 27958

The U.S. Training Center is run by Blackwater. Indeed, The U.S. Training Center website, can be accessed via Blackwater's forwarding URL at http://www.blackwaterusa.com/.

According to a February 2009 NY Times article, the U.S. Training Center is a Blackwater "subsidiary that conducts much of the company's overseas operations and domestic training." Blackwater changed the name of the facility from its old title, Blackwater Lodge and Training Center, earlier this this when they also changed their own name to "Xe".

Since Blackwater runs the U.S. Training Center, and the American Police Force stated on its own website, before it was deleted this morning, that it also runs the U.S. Training Center, there is no other conclusion to draw but that APF and Blackwater are one and the same. Or in other words, APF is a front group for Blackwater.

Exposed: American Police Force Is A Blackwater Front Group 011009shot3a
CLICK FOR ENLARGEMENT: From the U.S. Training Center website, the contact address is the same as on the Blckwater site becaue Blackwater owns the U.S. Training Center.

A domain registry check confirms that the U.S. Training Center website is registered to XE Services.

The fact that American Police Force attempted to hide the link by deleting the page on their website is further evidence that they are trying to conceal the fact that they are nothing more than a front group for Blackwater.

The U.S. Training Center is the training facility for Blackwater's front group, American Police Force. This means that the new training facility that "American Police Force" are trying to build in Hardin is another Blackwater training facility.

This also means that Blackwater troops, under the guise of "American Police Force" have been patrolling Hardin, posing as law enforcement, and are also attempting to boss the $27 million dollar detention center recently built in the Montana town.

Many people have expressed suspicions that the convicted criminal running "American Police Force," Michael Hilton, is not really the leader of the company and is merely a go between for his bosses. This is now confirmed by the revelation that APF is a front group for Blackwater.

APF's reticence to divulge who their parent company was to reporters is also explained by the fact that they are a Blackwater front.

As the videos below discuss, Blackwater has been widely attacked for its involvement in atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan. To have such individuals patrolling the streets of American towns posing as law enforcement and manning detention camps is a chilling precedent and all the more reason why American Police Force - or Blackwater as we should now call them - should be kicked out of Hardin immediately and face criminal charges for violating article 2 section 33 of the Montana Constitution.

In a brief conference session, Gallas received questions from the audience:

Anita Kinley - ARC4L Photojournalist/ County Coordinator:

“During your time among the protesters, what was the general mood of the crowd?”

Glenn Gallas:

“The crowd displayed a love for country, as many tears were shed among the peoples.  This was not an angry mob.”

Diane Silverman - Co-Chairman for The ‘After The Tea Party’ Committee:

“Glenn, did you feel as if your world had shifted?”

Glenn Gallas:

Yes, as I have felt since April 15, 2009 the movement has not been taken seriously.  However, with millions descending upon Washington, I felt like it finally got the attention of influential member of government.”

Earlier today, Congressman Paul appeared on MSNBC to discuss his efforts to Audit the Fed (hearing tomorrow!) and the need for transparency.

Instead of hurting the market, transparency would strengthen it by giving investors and other participants a more full picture on the best places to put their money.  Regardless of the economic reasons for an Audit, though, it is a moral imperative that we hold them accountable for how they are spending our money and for the deals to which they are committing both us and future generations.

On Wednesday, Congressman Paul appeared on Bloomberg TV to discuss the Fed's role in creating the financial crisis, how it has destroyed our economy, and the alternative presented by a free market.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCcDGAsW2WI

Later this week, the House Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing on Dr. Paul's Audit the Fed bill, HR 1207, as we move a step closer to finding out what the Fed has done with the trillions of dollars it has spent in this crisis and the deals it has made with foreign central banks and governments.

It's interesting to watch as the more questions the interviewers ask, the more their own statements reinforce the idea that government intervention is the problem.  As indicated by the title, Dr. Paul touches on how everything the politicians want to do, whether it be waging war or creating a welfare state, is enabled by the Federal Reserve.

This is a brilliant excerpt from an interview with John Taylor Gatto, the schoolteacher who discovered the true extent of the damage public schools do to children and traveled the world to show people what he discovered both about the system itself and its sinister origins. I still consider putting his book on our website to be one of my greatest achievements.

Somehow this nine-minute interview introduces the viewer to most of Gatto's major points on the government school system.

Watch, and share with your friends and family:

[This bill having already passed the Michigan House, the resolution is passed!  Thanks to David Dudenhoefer for posting this.  --Adam]

About a month ago, a coalition of liberty advocates descended onto Lansing Michigan to remind our legislators of one key aspect of our US Constitution.

State Sovereignty under the 10th amendment tells the Federal Government that those powers not enumerated in the Constitution are reserved for the several states and to the people.   It means if the federal government does something it ought not to, the States do not have to follow, nor can the Federal government impose upon the states that which would violate the constitutions of the several states.

Yesterday, on Constitution Day, our Michigan state senate passed 33-0 (4 not voting) SCR 004 to reaffirm Michigan's sovereignty under the 10th amendment. Thank State Senator Bruce Patterson 7th district Canton, for bringing this issue to the floor.

Here is the video of his speech:

http://www.senate.michigan.gov/gop/MMPlayer_Video.asp?ArticleID=663&District=7

Campaign for Liberty played a key role as we collected many signatures thought the summer to help move this bill along.

In liberty,

The Precinct Leader plants seeds in the neighborhood garden, cultivates and nurtures them, and watches them grow.  The Precinct Leader is a good neighbor.

A Precinct Leader makes the largest impact by simply connecting with neighbors.  Meet a neighbor while out raking leaves, walking the dog, getting the mail, shoveling snow or mowing the lawn.  Bring up something that affects the neighborhood and let them talk about it and you'll have an idea where they stand and what is important to them.  Knowing about specific legislation that affects your neighborhood and keeping up with current events in your area is critical.   That way, you can match the neighbor's concern with current and upcoming legislation.

"Hey, did you know the city council just approved an increase in what we pay for trash collection?  They're nickel and diming us to death."  Listen to the neighbor's response and take note of it.  If they are a hard-nosed tax and spender or don't want to talk about it, it's time to meet another neighbor.  Listening to your neighbors is the key to good planting practices.

Attending city or town council meetings is a great way to cultivate your garden.  When you listen to what people have to say and watch their reaction to certain things being said, you will know who might be a good person or persons to approach after the meeting and talk a little further to plant a seed.  "I can't believe they just approved that."  Let the neighbor talk.  "I live off of McGee Street.  Where are you?"  If they're in your precinct, they'll remember you when you do your door-to-door survey and other activities.  In fact, they may offer to help you.  They will recognize your name when they read your Letter to the Editor in the news.

Precinct Leaders are instrumental in keeping tabs on what area representatives are doing, watching them closely, building a "file" on them and calling them out on their infractions.  Letters to the Editor, radio call-ins and "tattling" to neighbors is effective and can even be fun.  The whole point is to nurture, protect and cultivate your neighborhood garden.

Before you know it, you'll be the person that neighbors come to when they want to talk about issues.  They'll come to you because they know you care, that you listen to them, that you're knowledgeable and that you will take action to protect your neighborhood.  You will be the person that neighbors come to when they learn of a new piece of legislation and wonder how it may affect them.  They will want to know your thoughts on upcoming election issues and candidates.  Your influence will be felt in the community and you may be asked to become a member of a board or even run for office.

As a team, Precinct Leaders will come together at county- and district-wide meetings and in the state capitol for legislative sessions.  Nationwide strategies will be employed.  The more voices, the greater the impact.  New faces and large crowds will keep local government on their toes.  They are used to having people attend meetings near election time, but they are not used to us being there asking thoughtful questions between elections, where harmful legislation is many times passed virtually unnoticed.

After this election, our neighbors will begin to realize that nothing has changed.  They'll continue to complain.  We'll continue to listen and plant our seeds, water them and feed them, and with time and patience, reap the rewards as we stand proudly together in our lush neighborhood gardens across the world.

It doesn't take much to make an impact on the politics in your community.  If you've taken the Local Coordinator training, you've already taken a huge step to being an effective leader in your community.  Local Coordinator training will equip you with the information and resources you need to make a difference.

We've often talked about the three areas of involvement: party involvement, issue involvement and running for office.  Well, I've just taken the plunge and have become an office holder.  Today I was appointed the Municipal Judge for Casselton.  ND laws allow cities smaller than 5000 to have judges who are not attorneys.  I am filling an unexpired term, so I will be running for election in June 2010.

This is a small position.  I will only hear traffic and city ordinance violations (except for 3rd time DUIs.)  Court is held two times a month and many times there are no cases to hear.  But if anyone remembers the kerfuffle with David Habiger earlier this year, one aspect of his case (the junk cars in his yard) was decided in Casselton's municipal court.  So no Kelo vs. New London cases, but maybe smaller, lesser known, Habiger-type cases.

This wasn't hard at all.  In fact, it was embarrassingly easy.  Casselton ran an ad in the paper, I responded and sent in a resume.  Now remember, I am a SAHM.  I haven't held a real job in 18 years.  But I wrote up a resume that listed my political involvement and my community service (I volunteer at the library, local nursing home and have worked a lot in Cub Scouts.)  Apparently this was good enough for our City Commission, because I got appointed without an interview, based solely on my resume and my reputation.

And now I'll have nine or ten months to further establish my reputation in the community before the next election.  I'll also be going to training in Bismarck and be meeting and networking with others in the state and local municipal system.  All of this is good experience and will make me more effective for future political races (mine or others I want to help along.)

So keep your eyes open.  There are lots of boards, commissions and committees you can get appointed to.  Some go begging to be filled and all will give you a door into the political process.  If a homeschooling mom from rural ND can get appointed as a municipal judge, you can easily do the same or similar.

Start today by getting the Coordinator Training.  And then attend local city or county council meetings, ask questions and find your place at the table.

I keep seeing Federal healthcare legislation defended by lumping it under Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. It is very clear in the Constitution the difference when the document speaks to the United States or to the People or to individual Persons. Under Article 1, Section 8, the reference to "common Defense and general Welfare of the United States" refers to the corporate entity of the country, not the constituent Persons or People as individuals. Discussion in the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers clarify that. Words in the Constitution are proper nouns and capitalized for a reason.
Federal healthcare legislation is un-constitutional as healthcare is not an enumerated power and should fall under Amendment 10, as a power reserved to the States respectively, and the people.

I agree that healthcare should be affordable and readily available to indigent and disadvantaged persons. But, it is NOT one of the powers that our founding fathers invisioned that the central government would have. It should be enacted at the State level where it can be more properly tailored to the constituent population. Several States have already decided that they want universal healthcare and have enacted legislation to provide it. Why would you want to force the people of another State to go along with something they do not want...even if you believe it in their best interest? If the Citizens of CA or MA want it...pay for it and enact it. If we here in FL do not want it, why get so worked up and force it on us? If I live in FL and want it so bad that it is a major concern, I could move to MA or CA, pay my fair share and get the healthcare. We have a unique opportunity to try 50 different plans....surely one State will get it right and serve as a model for the others?

Today, thousands of C4L members will be delivering petitions to their senators' local offices urging them to cosponsor and push for a standalone floor vote on S 604, the Senate version of Audit the Fed.

Meanwhile, C4L national staff and several grassroots volunteers are delivering over 100,000 petitions to Capitol Hill.

Many local C4L groups have invited area media to cover their petition drops and rallies.  I look forward to seeing the stories!

Please leave any experiences or thoughts from the day's action under this thread.  And don't forget, if you can't make it out to a drop, it's never too late to call, fax, and write Congress!

I have a new piece in the Christian Science Monitor:

Many liberals lambasted the Bush administration on detention policy and warrantless surveillance, often arguing that they violated the Constitution. Now the Obama administration is pushing ahead with plans to require every American to purchase health insurance.

Doesn't that also violate the Constitution?

The Constitution created a federal government limited to its enumerated powers. Everything Congress is allowed to do is spelled out in Article I. The 10th Amendment makes it explicit: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Nothing in the Constitution authorizes any federal involvement in healthcare - yet Congress may soon require everyone in America to buy insurance.

Your hard work in this historic movement to Audit the Fed continues to pay off!

Thanks to the thousands of Campaign for Liberty members who have tirelessly dedicated themselves to spreading the word, gathering petitions, and putting continuous pressure on Congress by calling, writing, and faxing, Congressman Ron Paul informed C4L today that House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank has officially agreed to hold hearings on HR 1207! The hearings are tentatively scheduled for Friday, September 25 at 9:00 am.

Your efforts have resulted in Washington's most secretive institution having to defend itself before the media, the American people, and now at a House hearing specifically focused on transparency.

This exciting victory is only one more achievement in a battle that we must see through until the end.

Contact your representative and senators and urge them to cosponsor HR 1207/S 604 if they have not yet done so. If they signed on, tell them it is imperative that Audit the Fed receive a standalone, up or down vote on its own merits. Full transparency in our nation's monetary system is too important to be a minor footnote in yet another massive Washington bill, and C4L will vigorously oppose any attempts to include HR 1207 in a regulatory reform package that increases the Fed's power over our economy and lives.

Less than a year ago, a thorough audit of the Federal Reserve wasn't on anyone's radar. Now, we have the support of seventy five percent of the American people, almost two thirds of the House of Representatives, nearly a quarter of the Senate, and an official hearing before the House Financial Services Committee!

There will be more exciting information to follow soon, but I wanted you to know right away.  Now is the time to turn the heat up even more.

Together, we will finish this fight!

The Czar Accountability and Reform Act of 2009, introduced in the House by Representative Kingston of Georgia on July 15, 2009, is a badly needed piece of legislation that we should all get behind. The appointment of "Czars" by presidents past and present is an unconstitutional power grab, which takes oversight away from the Congress, as ordered by the Constitution, and puts all power into the hands of the Executive Branch, effectively removing our system of checks and balances.

The appointment of Czars essentially creates a "shadow government", allowing unelected officials to form policy while avoiding public scrutiny through the Constitutionally mandated "advice and consent" of the Senate. These unelected Czars are neither vetted, nor are they required to be accountable for their actions, past or present, to the American people through their elected representatives.

HR 3226 would:

"...provide that appropriated funds may not be used to pay for any salaries or expenses of any task force, council, or similar office which is established by or at the direction of the President and headed by an individual who has been inappropriately appointed to such position (on other than an interim basis), without the advice and consent of the Senate."

This bill would return the power to Congress to properly vet all Presidential appointees, and it would greatly limit the power of the Executive Branch, bringing the separation of powers back in-line with the mandates provided for in our Constitution.

This bill currently sits in the Sub-Committee on Government Management, Organization, and Procurement, and has 34 cosponsors. Please call and write your Representatives and demand that they cosponsor this bill.

A rebellion is brewing over President Obama's planned address to public school students, to be aired live nationwide on September 8. There is apparently a federally recommended accompanying lesson plan for students throughout the country. Some are even advocating that parents have their children call in sick that day.

Of course, we can expect the usual accusations of hypocrisy: Would have the Republicans objected had Bush done this? Would the Democrats have been so favorable toward it had it been Bush who took this unprecedented move into the nation's classrooms?

But the real issue here transcends partisanship. First, there is the question of public schools. Many parents object to the schools being used to advance liberal statist propaganda, but advancing the cause of the government has always been a major function of government schooling.

Then there is the fundamental question of the presidency. The office was meant to be fairly humble, created under the Constitution as the chief magistrate and presiding officer with a short list on enumerated duties, most important the faithful execution of the nation's laws. Today, however, people look to the presidency as an extension of themselves and the national soul. And so has it become so important to people which president is in power, what his cultural background is, who his associates are, what his political biases are. But the president was never meant to have such awesome power. A much more humble office would not garner such anger and worship, for it would matter much less who occupied the office.

This is the latest development in the glorification of the president and the nationalization of American children through the increasingly federalized school system. We saw it under Bush, with No Child Left Behind and the erroneous willingness of Americans to call him "our commander in chief"—as opposed to the commander in chief of the Armed Forces. It is only getting worse today.

Obama's scheduled address should be resented, and opposed, but our understanding must run deeper than a mere opposition to the man who holds the office, lest we never restrain the presidency with Article II of the Constitution.

Candidate Barack Obama seemed to run against all things George W. Bush.  But with the former's election the two administrations have merged on many issues, including a shared willingness to violate civil liberties for little security benefit.  The latest is the Obama administration reaffirming Bush administration policies allowing the warrantless search of laptops and other electronic devices even of American citizens returning to the U.S. from abroad.  So much for the message of "change."

Reports the Washington Post:

The Obama administration will largely preserve Bush-era procedures allowing the government to search -- without suspicion of wrongdoing -- the contents of a traveler's laptop computer, cellphone or other electronic device, although officials said new policies would expand oversight of such inspections.

The policy, disclosed Thursday in a pair of Department of Homeland Security directives, describes more fully than did the Bush administration the procedures by which travelers' laptops, iPods, cameras and other digital devices can be searched and seized when they cross a U.S. border. And it sets time limits for completing searches.

But representatives of civil liberties and travelers groups say they see little substantive difference between the Bush-era policy, which prompted controversy, and this one.

"It's a disappointing ratification of the suspicionless search policy put in place by the Bush administration," said Catherine Crump, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. "It provides a lot of procedural safeguards, but it doesn't deal with the fundamental problem, which is that under the policy, government officials are free to search people's laptops and cellphones for any reason whatsoever."

Almost makes you wonder why we have elections!

Here is a bit of information that might be of interest to us all:

"MSEHP would grant emergency powers to the state governors and public health authorities during a declared "state of public health emergency." A "public health emergency" is

an occurrence or imminent threat of an illness or health condition, caused by bioterrism, epidemic or pandemic disease, or novel and highly fatal infectious agent or biological toxin, that poses a substantial risk of a significant number of human fatalities or incidents of permanent or long-term disability. Such illness or health condition includes, but is not limited to, an illness or health condition resulting from a national disaster.

(MSEHP Section 104(l))

MSEHP is designed to facilitate the early detection of a health emergency. It requires that comprehensive plans be prepared in advance which would provide a coordinated response to the health emergency.

In the event of a declared public health emergency, MSEHP grants the governor extraordinary powers. These powers include the collection of data and records, the control of property, the management of persons, and access to communications. These powers include such things as forced vaccination and treatment (Section 504), the tracking of individuals (Section 202), access to patient records (Section 506), and the prohibition of firearms (Section 402(c)). The act requires judicial review for some actions. For example, for mandatory quarantine to be instigated, a written court order must authorize the action, unless delay would pose an immediate threat to the public."

Coleman had earlier formed a Senate Exploratory Committee back in May, deciding to challenge Blanche Lincoln's Senate seat because of the egregious erosion of personal liberties facing this country due to the current liberal-controlled Congress. Coleman says that through his business, which is making food safer on 4 continents across the globe, he has been personally engaged in over 30 international markets and dozens of bureaucratic regulatory agencies both foreign and domestic. Coleman was awarded the Arkansas Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005 at the Clinton Library.

Coleman describes himself as a Conservative first and foremost. He has always been pro-life, a defender of the Constitution, traditional marriage, and the Second Amendment, and an opponent of embryonic stem cell research. Coleman declares that the out-of-control spending by our national government is the number one issue facing the country, and that our increasing debt is an urgent crisis of national security. The proposed healthcare legislation in Congress would only exacerbate the problem, not to mention completely destroy the healthcare system in America as we know it.

This election will not be Coleman's first political experience. He served as campaign manager for Mike Huckabee's U.S. Senate campaign in 1992.

Those of us who rely on the internet for alternative news and viewpoints should be concerned about some recent developments.  New legislation in Germany reported in the highly respected newspaper "Die Zeit" will require all internet users to be licensed with a backtracking feature that will enable the government to determine where any internet transmission originated.  The new regulations will apparently require all users to have a tamper proof internet ID and will be enforced by special police.  In Germany all telecommunications data, to include both internet and telephone, is already being retained by the government for six months under a law that has been in effect since 2008.  It is of particular interest to note what German politicians and officials have said in supporting the legislation.  One commented that it is necessary to stop the internet from becoming a "lawless chaos room."  Another described the internet as a "source of criminality, terrorism, and much similar filth."  Yet another said "What is illegal offline is also illegal online."

Governments in many European countries and also in the US already read and monitor internet traffic.  Some countries like China and Iran already control the servers for internet as well as the cell phone centers in their country and have not been shy about shutting down communications when threatened with what they perceive to be civil disorder.  In many public places in Europe internet services are frequently screened by software that blocks certain websites and the use of words or phrases that are considered objectionable.  This screening is also becoming common in hotels and other public places that offer internet services in the United States.  But what is really dangerous is the development of technologies that make it possible to monitor the internet combined with legislation that gives the authorities the ability to go after users who can then be charged with illegal behavior, such as is happening in Germany.

Judge Andrew Napolitano examines a tactic the federal government may use to bring about a national id card in this recent piece for Fox News.

Although many states across the country are resisting REAL ID, some in the federal government are attempting to enact many of the same provisions under a new name - PASS ID.

Click here for our recent Featured Article by James Bovard discussing the threats posed by both REAL ID and this attempt to repackage it.  (And click here to sign our petition opposing this new scheme.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBdrByVeQWg (Thanks to Minnesota Chris and Nancy.)

Don't forget that Judge Napolitano will be joining Congressman Ron Paul and Tom Woods for our Northeast Regional Conference September 17-19 in Valley Forge, PA.  Be sure to attend for not only a tremendous time of education, but also to network and plan with your fellow liberty-minded activists as we seek to turn back the tide of government tyranny and prevent further encroachments like a national id card.

Most C4L members are familiar with Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution which enumerates the powers of Congress. Most also, have a good understanding of Amendment 10 because it was written at a time when politicians didn't feel a need to obscure their intentions in difficult to understand legalese. Even though the 10th amendment was one of our original "Bill of Rights," demanded by enough Jeffersonians who were skeptical of some of the vague references in the Constitution, we have polititians today who claim that the General Welfare clause gives them just cause in enacting laws through powers not enumerated nor allowed by amendment.

Today, we have Cap and Trade in which the Federal Government has decided that it owns all rights to the use of carbon, or the right to control how states may want to control polution in their own borders. Congress is considering National Healthcare legislation in the name of General Welfare, yet as we shall see, nothing like this was ever intended. They have used tax payer funds to bail out private banks and buy what once were private corporations. They've passed budgets with enormous deficits knowing that the only way to pay for them is through an unrepresentative tax now called "Reserve Creation" by the Federal Reserve. They quickly passed a law called the "USA Patriot Act." The name of it sounds good, but among other things and in direct opposition to our Constitution it allows for today's patriots, tomorrow to be labeled by any president an "Enemy Combatant," and subject to being held in secret, and without trial indefinitely. I'll stop there for now.

The Soviet Union, Communist China, and the Fascist dictatorships of Germany and Italy in the early 1900's claimed their edicts were for the "General Welfare." Hitler came to power legally according to German law at the time. We always see the video clips of the street fights in Berlin and such. That's like taking the video of events at some of the Townhalls and believing that the year 2009 was full of street brawls across the country. The German people weren't all idiots. They were promised great things for their General Welfare, and found out too late that it was in exchange for their freedoms and at a huge cost of lives, fortune and humanity.

Concerns toward the "General Welfare" clause were presented by Robert Yates, also known as Brutus in his 6th Anti-Federalist paper written in December of 1787. This was responded to by James Madison in Federalist Paper #41 in which Madison made very clear that the term "General Welfare" was in itself a generalization in which the specifics are the enumerated powers in Article 1 Section 8, and nothing more.

The following are excerpts from the exchange:

----------------------------------

Robert Yates:

Brutus #VI  December 27, 1787

...How far the power to lay and collect duties and excises, may operate to dissolve the state governments, and oppress the people, it is impossible to say. It would assist us much in forming a just opinion on this head, to consider the various objects to which this kind of taxes extend, in European nations, and the infinity of laws they have passed respecting them. Perhaps, if leisure will permit, this may be essayed in some future paper....

...This power, exercised without limitation, will introduce itself into every comer of the city, and country - It will wait upon the ladies at their toilett, and will not leave them in any of their domestic concerns; it will accompany them to the ball, the play, and the assembly; it will go with them when they visit, and will, on all occasions, sit beside them in their carriages, nor will it desert them even at church; it will enter the house of every gentleman, watch over his cellar, wait upon his cook in the kitchen, follow the servants into the parlour, preside over the table, and note down all he eats or drinks; it will attend him to his bed-chamber, and watch him while he sleeps; it will take cognizance of the professional man in his office, or his study; it will watch the merchant in the counting-house, or in his store; it will follow the mechanic to his shop, and in his work, and will haunt him in his family, and in his bed; it will be a constant companion of the industrious farmer in all his labour, it will be with him in the house, and in the field, observe the toil of his hands, and the sweat of his brow; it will penetrate into the most obscure cottage; and finally, it will light upon the head of every person in the United States. To all these different classes of people, and in all these circumstances, in which it will attend them, the language in which it will address them, will be GIVE! GIVE!...

...It is as absurd to say, that the power of Congress is limited by these general expressions, "to provide for the common safety, and general welfare," as it would be to say, that it would be limited, had the constitution said they should have power to lay taxes, &c. at will and pleasure. Were this authority given, it might be said, that under it the legislature could not do injustice, or pursue any measures, but such as were calculated to promote the public good, and happiness. For every man, rulers as well as others, are bound by the immutable laws of God and reason, always to will what is right. It is certainly right and fit, that the governors of every people should provide for the common defence and general welfare; every government, therefore, in the world, even the greatest despot, is limited in the exercise of his power. But however just this reasoning may be, it would be found, in practice, a most pitiful restriction. The government would always say, their measures were designed and calculated to promote the public good; and there being no judge between them and the people, the rulers themselves must, and would always, judge for themselves...

----------------------

James Madison:

From Federalist #41  January 19, 1788

Some, who have not denied the necessity of the power of taxation, have grounded a very fierce attack against the Constitution, on the language in which it is defined. It has been urged and echoed, that the power "to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises, to pay the debts, and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States," amounts to an unlimited commission to exercise every power which may be alleged to be necessary for the common defense or general welfare. No stronger proof could be given of the distress under which these writers labor for objections, than their stooping to such a misconstruction.

Had no other enumeration or definition of the powers of the Congress been found in the Constitution, than the general expressions just cited, the authors of the objection might have had some color for it; though it would have been difficult to find a reason for so awkward a form of describing an authority to legislate in all possible cases. A power to destroy the freedom of the press, the trial by jury, or even to regulate the course of descents, or the forms of conveyances, must be very singularly expressed by the terms "to raise money for the general welfare."

But what color can the objection have, when a specification of the objects alluded to by these general terms immediately follows, and is not even separated by a longer pause than a semicolon? If the different parts of the same instrument ought to be so expounded, as to give meaning to every part which will bear it, shall one part of the same sentence be excluded altogether from a share in the meaning; and shall the more doubtful and indefinite terms be retained in their full extent, and the clear and precise expressions be denied any signification whatsoever? For what purpose could the enumeration of particular powers be inserted, if these and all others were meant to be included in the preceding general power? Nothing is more natural nor common than first to use a general phrase, and then to explain and qualify it by a recital of particulars. But the idea of an enumeration of particulars which neither explain nor qualify the general meaning, and can have no other effect than to confound and mislead, is an absurdity, which, as we are reduced to the dilemma of charging either on the authors of the objection or on the authors of the Constitution, we must take the liberty of supposing, had not its origin with the latter.

Americans have tagged our two top enemies as North Korea and Iran.  Explains Rasmussen Reports:

Both are developing nuclear weapons and refuse to listen to the United Nations and other international mediators who are trying to talk them out of it. They're also the nations that sizable majorities of Americans consider to be the biggest enemies of the United States.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey asked adults to rate the United States' relationship with 18 other countries whose names are regularly and prominently in the headlines, and North Korea and Iran top the list of America's enemies by far.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of Americans describe North Korea as an enemy of the United States. Only four percent (4%) view the isolated Communist state as an ally, and 15% say it's somewhere in between an ally and enemy.

If this is the case, then what is our big military for?  Neither country threatens America, which could wipe both of them off of the map with the missiles from one submarine.  Moreover, South Korea is far wealthier and more populous than North Korea.  Israel is far more powerful militarily than Iran.  Even our allies could defeat supposed American enemies number one and two!

The U.S. needed a big military when it confonted the Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact, Maoist China, and communist stragglers like North Korea.  But today we account for half of the world's spending to defend us from ... North Korea and Iran?!?

It's time for change, real change, in Washington.

As the GOP continues its wilderness wandering, Thomas Eddlem of the Boston Conservative Examiner takes a look at the energy exhibited by the different facets of our growing movement.

Ron Paul's "rEVOLution" (revolution with "love" spelled backwards) has been the sole bright light among GOP organizing efforts since Obama's election.  In a party marred by the awkward resignation of Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin from the Alaska governorship and a variety of sexual scandals (David Vitter, John Ensign, Mark Sanford, etc), Ron Paul alone has unified the GOP around an overwhelmingly popular proposal: Auditing the Federal Reserve....

Both Audit the Fed and our Revolution extend far beyond the GOP, however.  Although many of our members are involved in taking back their local Republican Parties and expanding our influence within that national party structure, our movement's activists span many party, philosophical, and cultural backgrounds.

And we're only getting started.

Because of a two-inch minnow on the endangered species list, the water to California Central Valley has been turned off.  Farms are closed, entire communities are suffering, with unemployment up to 40% in some areas, and people are being forced to visit food banks.

Sean Hannity interviewed comedian Paul Rodriguez who is fighting to get the water turned back on.  Rodriguez, an Obama supporter, admits "We wanted change; we didn't think it would be this kind of change, but he kept his promise - we got change."

Notice that a Campaign for Liberty sign is slipped into view at about 2:20, then again at about 4:00, and again at 5:20.

John Stossel has some important insights on the drive to nationalize American health care:

Although President Obama and big-government activists demonize health-insurance companies, the companies "are still mostly on board with the president's effort to overhaul the U.S. health-care system," the Wall Street Journal reports; and ...

Although the activists criticize Big Pharma, "The drug industry has already contributed millions of dollars to advertising campaigns for the health care overhaul through the advocacy groups like Healthy Economies Now and Families USA. It has spent about $1 million on similar advertisements under its own name," the Times reports.

Big Pharma and Big Insurance want Obama-style health-care reform?

It's not so hard to understand. "The drug makers stand to gain millions of new customers," the Times said.

And from the Journal: "If health legislation succeeds, the [insurance] industry would likely get a fresh batch of new customers. In particular, many young and healthy people who currently forgo coverage would be forced to sign up." No wonder insurers are willing to stop "discriminating" against sick people. (Forget that the essence of insurance is discrimination according to risk.)

Read the rest. This is an important factor in play with the mixed economy: Big business is often among the greatest beneficiaries, and therefore among the biggest supporters, of more government intervention in the economy. Government provides the most influential corporate interests with monopoly privileges, captive markets, and burdensome regulations that hurt their smaller competitors. I've written about the ties between corporatism and American socialism here.

Understanding this dynamic is crucial to tackling the modern interventionist state, and opposing it. Although true believers in a purer socialism and anti-corporate social democracy promote radical swings toward more government power, most advancements of leviathan involve something in it for all the major players in Washington. The unions, special interests and especially major industry usually gain the most, along with of course the permanent bureaucracy and the government itself, when economic liberty is trampled.

To those who are skeptical of corporate America, who criticize the medical insurance industry and third-party provision of health care (itself a result not of free enterprise but of government intervention), we must explain that any likely outcome in today's drive toward socialized medicine is a climate that only bolsters the profit and power of corporate medicine over everyday Americans' lives. When all the biggest players in the industry sit together in a smoky room and decide to fix prices and divy up the spoils, we all call it collusion. When a politician is in the room with them, it's called "universal health care."

Anita Kinley -- ARC4L Photojournalist

Caleb Kinley, Arkansas Campaign for Liberty State Coordinator (ARC4L), was asked to provide his official press release and video concerning Rob Richard’s television appearance on the news program “On the Record” with Greta Van Susteren:

“Arkansas C4L Patriot and Regional Co-Coordinator Rob Richard (Region 2) was Greta Van Susteren’s guest tonight for her show “On the Record”.  Rob attended the Townhall Meeting of Congressman Vic Snyder (2nd district) and Congressman Mike Ross (4th district) held in Little Rock, AR.  Rob had the opportunity to question Congressman Snyder (remember, Snyder works FOR Rob) and his question was basically (I greatly paraphrased), “Will you use the same healthcare reform program you’re trying to push on we the people today?”  Congressman Snyder, as far as I could tell, did not answer the simple question.”  -- Caleb Kinley

Mr. Richard has proven to be an outspoken voice against those in government wishing to destroy the foundations of The Constitution of the United States.

When asked tonight by Susteren:

“Is this a one-time deal, or do you intend to keep attempting to get your voice heard?”

Richard replied:

“This is certainly not the first time that I have made my voice heard.  And I can promise, that along with Campaign for Liberty….We Are Here….and….We Are Loud!  We won’t stop speaking until we see America returned to the principles as the Founders laid out in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.”

Revolutionary War figure Joseph Warren, in his account of the Battle of Lexington, April 26, 1775, put forth the following statement:

“Nevertheless, to the persecution and tyranny of his cruel ministry we will not tamely submit — appealing to Heaven for the justice of our cause, we determine to die or be free….”

Rob Richard’s “justice of cause” has led him to participate in a number of ARC4L events throughout the state of Arkansas for 2009.

“God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. …
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it’s rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure.”

So now I can check one off my "bucket list" -- I've been kicked out of a public "town hall"  meeting for doing nothing (complete with police escort).  Sweeet.

The meeting was last night, at the Georgia 4th Congressional district in Clarkston, held by Congressman Hank Johnson (D).  The facilities of the Clarkston campus of Georgia Perimeter College were used.

A number of us liberty-minded folks (C4L and otherwise), and some GOP faithful showed up to ensure, at the minimum, skepticism accounted for and to see a real debate fostered over the proposed national health care legislation.  As far as I know there was no "right wing" or otherwise organized effort to "swamp" the meetings.

By contrast, it was obvious that organized left-wing groups turned out in force.  People sporting "Teamster" colors were plentiful, as well as Obama acolytes and "single payer" health care system advocacy groups.

The original time for the meeting was 7pm.  Within the day before, it was mysteriously moved up to 6:15 -- perhaps to make sure that working people hit the maximum rush hour.  No matter; I got there around 5:30, so I got an early-enough place in line to get into the main auditorium.   It was pathetically small for the crowd lined up "around the block" to attend the meeting, so only a small portion of the crowd got in.  Me and some C4Lers were among them.  Others ended up in overflow rooms, having become spectators, watching the proceedings on large TVs.

I first got a bad feeling about the whole event being orchestrated when police started warning people not to bring cameras in.  No cameras?  At a public meeting on a public facility?  That's odd.  Well, they weren't going to stop me from making a voice recording using my small sansa mp3 player.

My next signal something was "off" was when, upon entering, I had my pamphlets and fliers confiscated from me by the police.  No explanation was given, just that I "couldn't have them".  This annoyed me, because I had been handed some useful campaign materials and other informational leaflets, including one which had bullet points critically-examining the proposed legislation.  But I had little choice.

The reason for this confiscation became clear once we were inside and seated: we were given instead "official" materials from Johnson and the Democratic party and the Obama administration, including a glossy promotional piece supporting the legislation.  Surprise, surprise.

The first part of the "meeting" was relatively calm.  Johnson of course gave his speech on why we needed this legislation, correctly pointing out high costs, declining coverage, and declining quality, but also excoriating health insurance companies for being "profiteering" (taking sure to make note of the executives "getting paid millions") and saying that "deregulation like the financial sector" was responsible for the problems in the health care sector.   It was pretty much the usual left-wing "politics as usual", with zero admission whatsoever of the role government interference has played in creating the problem (which I would define as a government-protected cartel of health insurers -- privatized, but not free market).  None of this was any surprise.

We then moved on to the panelists, virtually all of whom were biased strongly towards a "solution" in the proposed, nationalized format.  The one exception, second to last, was a Dr. Todd Williamson, from the Medical Association of Georgia, who advocated fixing the tax code, making people's health insurance dollars portable and as tax-free as they are for employers, and moving to a system where people's health insurance follows them and is not tied to a job (largely solving the "pre-existing condition" problem).  He strongly opposed putting government between people and their doctors, and suggested that like in medicare, a government option for health insurance in general would soon turn into virtually the "only option".  He got a rousing ovation from us and a large portion of the crowd -- the first and strongest standing ovation of the night.   He was, however, the token dissenter.

We then moved on to two pre-screened citizen testimonials, presented from the stage.   One was a woman who had chronic illness in her family with her children, and could not even remotely afford health insurance, with costs reaching astronomical levels (as high as $3000 a month just for premiums, she said).  Another was a woman who ran a nursing service, who said she could only afford to provide a very poor health plan for her employees because of the cost.  She advocated a public option to remove this burden.

These are of course characteristic problem cases with our current dysfunctional system, and few serious critics dispute these issues.   However, no cases were brought forward that illustrate how the problem is due to the tax structure and other regulatory quirks.  For example, my insurance premiums (the total of the employer part plus "my" part -- both of which are really my part) went down from over $400 a month to about $100 a month -- for the exact same high-deductible plan -- when I left my last major employer and became self-employed.  This case is typical and shows how the inflexibility and tax bias of the employer-linked health insurance system is used to inflate premiums, which in turn inflates all medical costs.  But, no coverage of this was presented -- perhaps because that would show that the government's tax code and other aspects of regulation are largely responsible.

In my observation, government is intimately involved in creating the existing broken-down system, but it has not even remotely fessed up to this role (in constrast to Hank Johnson's blaise assertions, there has never been a health care "deregulation" -- only more regulation).  That is my main criticism with the proposed health care reform plan and the general debate around the issue -- you cannot solve a problem until you understand what caused it, and "evil health insurance profiteers" falls a bit short.  I am not necessarily against a government option, as long as it is not structured so that it edges out free market health insurance for most of us.  But any government option put in place without solving the structural cost issues of the private portion of the system will inevitably gobble up most of, if not the entire market.  This threatens to simply become another area where the government comes in to provide "something for nothing", but fails to contain costs for society as a whole, and simply ends up printing money to make up the gap -- a cost everyone pays but few see.

This has not worked so well in housing or education.  Shouldn't we be worried about the feat being reproduced in health care?  That was my concern, at least.

Finally, we moved to floor comments.  However, only residents of the 4th District were to be allowed to comment with priority, so I didn't bother to get up and make my comments above.  I decided to just listen.

The comments were an interesting mix.  It did seem that a majority complained of health care costs and simply wanted a government option to be provided so they could have these costs eliminated.  Some were obviously "career welfare recipients" -- so their perspective is inevitably going to be less concerned with nominal prices and more concerned with having expenses in general eliminated.  But some were not -- such as a gentleman who reported his wife and new baby were kicked out of the hospital a day early after a C-section -- because insurance didn't cover the extra day.

These comments, again, were typical, and certainly represented accurate complaints about the cost and coverage pressures of the existing "system".  These are the things no one is arguing.

But there were some insightful points from some people that I didn't know, and did not appear to have any particular political affiliation.

One Asian woman was a doctor and supported reform, but expressed concern at the cost, especially given the huge deficits we are accumulating for various bailouts.   She also expressed concern with many millions of people still being left uninsured, as well as millions being forced off their existing plans (Johnson and his aide replied that "things had changed" since the earlier version of the bill, and all concerns would be taken care of).

An elderly black man expressed frustration at the lack of "good information" on the proposed legislation, complaining of nothing but "sound bites" from all sides.  He expressed a desire for straight "answers" on what is going to happen to medicare (Johnson assured there would be no change).

A black woman seemed peeved at all of the people who had come before her begging for more welfare.  She said she had always "supported herself", and told Johnson to "woman up" to the insurance companies, as they would be the ones to "truly benefit" from this legislation.  She suggested that the problems could be fixed without any cost to the federal government with mandates requiring certain aspects of coverage (such as children, domestic partners), and that Congress's health plan should be offered generally by the same insurers.  She made a point that prices seemed to be based on some sort of insurance racket.

A caucasian man announced himself as a Catholic, acknowledged there were problems, and explained that (based on principles borrowed from Catholicism) we should seek to solve them at a more local level before going directly for a national solution (Johnson replied by asserting that the problems could "only be solved at the national level.")

And perhaps the most important general comment from those queued up came from a gentleman (I cannot recall his appearance) who expressed confusion at the many bills, but asked if we could somehow have a town meeting when a single bill had been settled on, but before it had passed.

Tellingly, Hank Johnson sputtered and bumbled, but finally responded that no, it was not likely we could actually debate the bill that was going to be passed.  But, he said, we could certainly have a town hall meeting after the bill had passed!

This drew laughs and hackles from the entire crowd.  Johnson responded bizarrely by launching into diversionary criticism of the Blue Dog Democrats and Republicans, capping off with an exhortation that we "have gotta do something" (nationally, of course).

This was perhaps the most telling interaction about how the whole system works: we are to be swamped by a confusion of conflicting principles and directives and details, and end up arguing with each other about things that perhaps are in only one version of a bill or another (or none at all), which may or may not appear in a final bill.   Then the bill will be passed quickly by congress, after its usual horse trading, and we'll be unravelling the monstrosity for months if not years to come.  This process belies utter contempt for the citizenry and perhaps reveals that our government has reached a stage where it simply cannot function if proposed legislation is clearly and methodically open to scrutiny.

Anyway...

The session was in its final few minutes when the "big confrontation" happened.  While the "critics" had been booing, cheering, and heckling Johnson and others from the floor the whole time (and the whole audience was certainly guilty of applausing and cheering out of turn), it was not until C4Ler Sean Mangieri bellowed out "where in the Constitution does it authorize you to do this?" that some sort of invisible line was crossed.  Johnson began responding, fumbling a bogus justification that the "general welfare clause" gives the government authority to do anything, but apparently the order had been given.  The police came over and tapped me on the shoulder, apparently thinking it was me who had made the remark; to which I said "I didn't say anything."  Various people in the audience pointed to Sean, who was sitting next to me, and he was "tapped out" by the police.  However, they returned anyway and told me I had to go as well and this was my "last chance".  When I protested again that I didn't say anything, the reply was "it doesn't matter, they want you out."

Two other people we know were thrown out in this sweep as well, one of whom had just been "warned" not to shout any more comments, but was ejected without having said anything additional.

I have the whole session up until that point recorded (audio only; 23MB mp3).

An AP story and CBS piece are available which quote from Mr. Mangieri.

Altogether, I am very disappointed with what passes for "debate" in this country on pressing issues of national concern and relevance to our basic freedoms.  It is obvious from this interaction that Johnson, like so many others in Congress, has made up his mind and is acting as part of the party machinery.  It seems he expected only to get a "rubber stamp" from "friendlies" in the audience, and inasmuch as that did not happen, police were brought in to intimidate and eject.   His comments about not being able to debate the final bill, and not being restricted by the Constitution, really do tell all.

UPDATE: Here is a short YouTube video that a fellow attendee put together over the above soundtrack, with some snapshots of the event and "follow along" subtitles of Johnson's torturing of the Constitution.

From the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Geithner, in a letter to U.S. lawmakers, said that the Treasury projects that the current debt limit could be reached as early mid-October. Increasing the limit is important to instilling confidence in global investors, Mr. Geithner said....

Just to reiterate that he really meant what he wrote:

"It is critically important that Congress act before the limit is reached so that citizens and investors here and around the world can remain confident that the United States will always meet its obligations," Mr. Geithner said in a letter to lawmakers....

We can instill confidence in our creditors by taking more and more and more, right?  I mean, we've so obviously demonstrated our ability to repay our debts.  Besides, how better to illustrate we can "meet our obligations" than by continuously pushing them away?

Cutting back spending in order to avoid hitting the current debt ceiling might mean (*shudder*) showing some fiscal restraint and responsibility.

Try increasing your own debt limit sometime and see how much confidence it instills in, say, the electric company.

While protesting health care "reform" and collecting signatures on Capitol Hill, Young Americans for Liberty members were forced to leave by DC police due to a lack of a permit.  The SWAT officer cited 36 CFR 7.96 under federal regulations to force the young group of liberty lovers to stop their freedom advancing activities.

In 2004, longtime Ron Paul supporter Gary Marbut, president of the Montana Shooting Sports Association, wrote the Montana Firearms Freedom Act, which declares federal firearms laws relating to the vast majority of guns built, used, and kept within the state of Montana to be null and void.

On April 15, 2009, Governor Brian Schweitzer signed the Act, HB 246, into law, thanks to the efforts of another Ron Paul supporter, freshman legislator Joel Boniek, and the combined efforts of Campaign for Liberty members and other freedom-minded activists.

According to Gary, "Now clones of the MFFA have been introduced in AK, TX, TN, SC, and MN.  The TN clone has passed the House and Senate with considerable majorities.  I hear serious talk about more clones of the MFFA to be introduced ASAP in FL, GA, MO, OK, KS, CO, AZ, WY, UT, ID, and WA."

Not one to step down after such a rebuke, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) has sent a letter to all Montana Federal Firearms Licensees telling them to ignore Montana's law.

Read the letter here.

How will the state respond?  Stay tuned.

Here is a video version of a powerpoint/keynote presentation I made to summarize the key points of Ron Paul's The Revolution: A Manifesto.  The presentation has several extra slides that aren't in the video, and I would like to make it available to Campaign For Liberty members once I figure out a way to do so.

Mod - You just did, Chance.  Great job!

Needless to say, I'm very proud of South Carolina's junior Senator right now:

"While Bush and McCain were "abandoning free-market principles to save the free-market system" by signing off on an $800 billion Wall Street Bailout, the Republican establishment still treated the truly free-market Ron Paul as some sort of crazy, irrelevant money crank.

It's amazing the difference a year makes.

As of this writing, every single Republican in the House and over 60 Democrats have co-sponsored Paul's H.R. 1207 Federal Reserve Transparency Act, which calls for an audit of the Federal Reserve. Given the current economic crisis, it turns out that many legislators are eager to see just how the Fed is able to print new money out of thin air. In the 1980's, Paul introduced similar legislation with virtually no help from his fellow Republicans. In 2009, the entire party has lined up behind Ron Paul.

And big kudos are in order for one Republican who has gone out of his way to help form that line - Senator Jim DeMint."

House Democrats released the Health Care bill today: HR 3200, America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.

The Bill is 1018 pages and Speaker Pelosi is planning to have the bill voted on before the August recess, to meet the Presidents wishes.

Arkies stand with Ron Paul

Paul Barton contributes an item of interest from Washington. All four members of the House from Arkansas have joined Rep. Ron Paul's legislation to audit the Federal Reserve.

By Paul Barton

WASHINGTON – It’s not often that you see Rep. Vic Snyder of Arkansas sponsoring the same legislation as Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, the past GOP presidential candidate and now one of Congress’s most outspoken member on the alleged evils of the Federal Reserve Board, the nation’s central bank.

But Snyder, known as a thoughtful Democrat, along with the other three Arkansas members in the House have signed on to Paul’s HR 1207, a bill to audit the Federal Reserve.

Paul now has a majority of House members signed on – about 270 and climbing - and the bill is beginning to get hearings.

“The public is demanding transparency in government like never before,” Paul says on his website devoted to the issue, RonPaul.com. Click here to read the rest.

Does this not fall under Rule 16? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standing_Rules_of_the_United_States_Senate,_Rule_XVI

Senate Democrats Attach Hate Crimes Law to "Must Pass" Defense Bill

http://earthfirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/spector-switch.jpg... Psssst. Spector... attach this to the "must pass" defense bill.

David M. Herszenhorn

The New York Times
July 13, 2009

Senate Democrats said on Monday that they would seek to broaden the federal hate crimes law to protect victims of attacks based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disabilities.

To lift the chances of passage, Democrats said the legislation, known as the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, would be attached as an amendment to the annual defense authorization bill - a must-pass measure.

The proposal is named for Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student who was tied to a fence, beaten and left to die in 1998.

The Senate approved the legislation last year, also as part of the military authorization bill, but it was never reconciled with a similar House-passed bill.

The Federal Reserve is one of the most powerful and secretive institutions in Washington, long considered beyond the reach of lawmakers. But now, as details emerge of how the Fed secretly doled out more than a trillion dollars during the financial crisis, a rare bipartisan movement in Congress demands that the Fed be held accountable.

This Wednesday, our partners over at the American Conservative Defense Alliance will be sponsoring a talk by Christopher A. Preble, Director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Cato Institute and author of The Power Problem: How American Military Dominance Makes Us Less Safe, Less Prosperous, and Less Free.

From their press release:

A majority of Americans want to reduce our military presence abroad, allowing our allies and other nations to assume greater responsibility for their own defense and to enforce security in their respective regions. Christopher Preble, author of the new book The Power Problem, agrees and asserts that the foreign policy experts who disdain the public's perspective are wrong. He documents how the possession of vast military strength runs contrary to the original intent of the Founders and has, as they feared, shifted the balance of power away from individual citizens and toward the central government, and from the legislative and judicial branches of government to the executive.

The event starts at 12:30 pm eastern and lasts until 1:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. It will be held on the 6th floor conference room at 722 12th St., NW, Washington, DC, across from the Marriott, Metro Center.

To RSVP, send your name and contact information to rsvp@acdalliance.org

I started out just wanting to re-post the following video from Russia Today on youtube, which features Ron Paul endorsed Congressional candidate Adam Kokesh, and senatorial hopeful from Connecticut, Peter Schiff. Then I started thinking...I have been disconnected from the Main Stream Media for a while. Occasionally, just checking in to hear the spin, or post a video that I feel is worthy of liberty-lovers' time and energy. So, I decided to search the Internet and a few prominent news sites for news from "Freedom Fest 2009"...The result, nada, nothing, zilch. I found an article about the UFC 100 which occurred in Vegas this weekend, but no prominent stories from Sin City about the virtues of freedom. Surprised? I am not.

Conclusion, in this era we must be the media. And we must be more vigilant than ever in promoting the ideals of liberty. Russia today is the most prolific generator of videos on youtube. And while most of what RT produces I view with uncertainty (they too have an agenda), they occasionally break out with a story that benefits our cause. Maybe its the adage, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Either way, enjoy this piece.

Update: 2nd video added 07-14-09 7:30 am

For liberty,

Rob

That's right folks.  Right under our noses, the White House directed and Congress mandated to have this exercise involving Australia, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.  This was put out by FEMA.  If you want to read the whole report, go to http://www.fema.gov/media/fact_sheets/nle09.shtm

This information was presented at the Pulaski County Republican Committee meeting July 9, 2009 by:  Mark Phillips and Rob Richards.  At first the group thought it was funny, but when the paper was sent around the room, that mood quickly changed.  The area affected is FEMA Region VI which includes:  Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.  We don't need foreign troops here in the U.S.A.!

Further information came from the PCRC who contacted Sen Lincoln's office and asked them if this was true.  They not only said it was true, they also pointed out that it would not be publicized and that there was to be a secret meeting with these folks from Australia, Canada, Mexico and the UK.  We need to make known our displeasure over their secrecy when we are suppose to have transparency!

Poll: Do You Support Having A National Level Exercise Involving Foreign Countries?

Yes. We need all the help we can get.
No. We can handle whatever emergency on our own.

I did it, I finally did it.  My hair is now gone.  My son Jonah used the Wahl hair clippers with no attachment and cut my hair down to stubs.  Remember, that was the pledge I made on my radio show, Patriot Pastor's Radio.  The pledge was if all my congressmen cosponsored HR 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, I would let him (my son) cut my hair, and he did.  We could hardly keep a straight face, but we made it through the "Haircut for Liberty." Unprecedented in our nations recent history, the silent liberty loving majority has begun to wake up to the "long train of abuses" being perpetrated against them by the current ruling classes. Unfortunately, many in the leadership of the many grass-roots organizations attempting to marshal the awaking body politic have asserted that they should not be politically active nor partisan motivated. God love the Birchers, but for the last 50+ years they have attempted that exact same non-political, educational effort to no avail...for here we are watching as the Congress and the White House rip our Constitution to shreds, destroying our Republic in the process, while we stand by being non-political and non-partisan. What have the current incumbent bailout voters to fear so long as we remain non-political? They can simply wait out this current gale of anger from us and then go back to their nefarious ways when we go back to sleep. The only thing they understand, like so many tyrants before them, is political force. When we start replacing them with Constitutional Conservatives, in large numbers, THEN we will certainly have their attention.

So how do we keep these new patriots awake and in the fight? I guarantee you it's not through being non-political and merely an educational movement. People do not stay up all night making signs to hang from freeway overpasses nor post blogs all over the net for "educational" efforts. They do not give money in record amounts, like they did for Ron Paul, for efforts that will not result in real change. They do not get back involved in their parties to rid them of the socialists(Democrats) and corporatists(Republicans) that have taken them over by staying neutral. And they do not march in the streets with the same fire and righteous anger as they did on April 15th 2009 when they are repeatedly told that their fight is going to be non-political, neutral and therefore irrelevant. However, we will do and have done all of those things for Constitutional Conservative Candidates that we KNOW will stand up and fight for US!

My fellow Americans and Oklahomans, there are Constitutional Conservative Candidates stepping forward to fight for us all over this country and they have the establishment in both major parties running scared. As a result you can bet that they will not get any financial aid nor volunteer support from their respective party establishments. Furthermore, real Constitutional Conservative Candidates will refuse to solicit money from lobbyists or party officials known to be supporting bailout voters. Thus, as much as the Constitutional Conservatives are riding to our aid, we must ride to theirs and support them with donations and volunteerism.

Socialism and Corporatism are taking over our government, our Republic is failing, the Constitution is being ignored and the American birthright of freedom is being sold out by the very people sworn to protect it. The time for neutrality and sunshine patriotism is over. It's time to fight with your activism and your money and your votes; or watch your country die. It's time to hold the representatives we elected accountable by replacing them with Constitutional Conservative Candidates from within our ranks. It is time to WAKE UP, and fight for liberty!

The consequences of continued non-political efforts and neutrality are too heinous to even consider. But consider them we must. When the Roman Republic fell to imperialism from within itself, the western world did not know freedom again until 1776. For 1700+ years freedom and individual liberties were ignored by the great western powers of the world. If we let freedom and liberty fail on our watch, how long will it be, how many generations will pass, before the next George Washington or Thomas Jefferson are born?

We must fight now or freedom will fail and our children will wake up slaves in the land our fathers founded. FOR LIBERTY!

This July 4th, between 500 to 600 people gathered on the lawn of the Garland County Courthouse in Hot Springs, AR.  While a couple people estimated between 400-450 in attendance, I personally stopped counting at 540, plus, Pastor Doug Jones of the Garland County Watchmen, said he gave out 580 flags.  I stopped counting because I didn't want to sroll too far away from my children.

The following video is less than two minutes in length, and was made about 15 minutes into the start of the rally. Many more people showed up about midway through the event (9am to 11am). Btw, after you watch the video, please see my wifes blog post which includes more information and some very nice pictures.  Her post is here. Anyway, enjoy the short video.

Today, our battle to pass Audit the Fed through the U.S. Senate has been joined. The first shot was fired on the floor of the Senate tonight by Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

Senator DeMint has a well-deserved reputation for taking the battle to the other side in the Senate, and tonight he once again proved why he is such a valuable ally in our fight to bring transparency and accountability to the Federal Reserve.

Occasionally, a chance comes along to take quick action on a bill, and Senator DeMint took just such an opportunity.

A little while ago, the Senate voted to pass HR 2918, the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act. This $3.1 billion bill contains, among many other things, provisions for GAO audits on certain agencies.

With this in mind, Senator DeMint attached the full text of S 604, the Senate version of Ron Paul's Audit the Fed bill, to HR 2918 as Senate Amendment 1367 before it was considered for final passage.

However, Senate Democrats refused to even allow a vote on the amendment! Instead of giving it a chance to stand before the Senate, they swept it under the rug with a parliamentary tactic.

After Senator DeMint brought Audit the Fed to the floor, Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska raised a "point of order" to prevent a vote, claiming that the amendment violated Senate Rule 16 by "legislating" on an appropriations bill. The Senate president agreed, and the amendment was shot down.

Senator DeMint did not back down, though, and directly challenged Senate leadership by pointing out the other GAO audits contained in the bill. As Senator DeMint listed them off, the Senate president was forced to agree with Senator DeMint that each one he described, all of which would be left in for final passage, also violated Senate Rule 16.

So the issue wasn't about "legislating" on the bill or violating the Senate Rules (which is commonly done), it was about preventing a thorough audit of the Federal Reserve for the first time in its history!

Senate leadership is hoping this issue will just fade away so they can get on to what they deem to be more important business, like dictating what kind of healthcare plan you and I can carry or passing destructive Cap-and-Trade legislation.

But the American people deserve answers on what the Fed has done with trillions of our tax dollars and what they are committing us and future generations to as part of their secret deals with foreign central banks and governments.

The leadership could have taken a crucial, historic step toward achieving such accountability today, but they turned their backs on transparency. This fight, though, is just beginning.

As Senator DeMint noted from the floor, the Audit the Fed bill has wide bipartisan support, and he rightly warned the Senate even if they delay today, they WILL have to deal with the issue on the floor.

It is up to you and me to back up Senator DeMint's words by making sure the momentum continues to build and the bill comes up for a final vote.

The rejection of the Audit amendment is just the first battle in our war. Now is the time to really put the pressure on the U.S. Senate to Audit the Fed!

Senator DeMint fired the opening salvo and showcased the hypocrisy of the Senate for allowing other GAO audits to be included in the bill while refusing to even allow a vote on Fed transparency.

Again, we're just getting started. Senator DeMint will keep fighting to pass Audit the Fed on its own or as an amendment, and we need to continue putting pressure on our senators to do everything in their power to achieve a floor vote! Visit our Audit the Fed action page to call, write, and fax your senators tonight and urge them to support S 604 and to push for a final vote.

Be sure as well to sign our online petition calling for action!

Update: (And check out Senator DeMint using our fact sheet on the Senate floor!)

Despite this unprecedented challenge to the legitimacy of the debates, the media virtually censored this story. If you haven't checked out this vital comparison of today's situation with the Great Depression, I recommend you do so right now:

http://www.voxeu.org/index.php?q=node/3421

Commentary contrasting the two episodes compares America then and now. This, however, is a misleading picture. The Great Depression was a global phenomenon. Even if it originated, in some sense, in the US, it was transmitted internationally by trade flows, capital flows and commodity prices. That said, different countries were affected differently. The US is not representative of their experiences.

Our Great Recession is every bit as global, earlier hopes for decoupling in Asia and Europe notwithstanding. Increasingly there is awareness that events have taken an even uglier turn outside the US, with even larger falls in manufacturing production, exports and equity prices.

In fact, when we look globally...

We may be on track for the biggest global depression in a century.

By a final vote of 219-212, HR 2454, the Cap-and-Tax scheme, has passed the House.

Eight Republicans switched over to make the final margin possible.  These eight are:

Bono Mack
Castle
Kirk
Lance
LoBiondo
McHugh
Reichert
Smith (NJ)

See the full vote here.

Since this is such a high priority issue for the Obama administration, it's amazing that the margin was this thin.  Incredibly, 44 Democrats voted against the legislation.  That would not have happened without your efforts.

Thanks to all those who called, faxed, and emailed. The fight moves to the Senate now, where the bill faces an uncertain future.  We still have a very good chance to stop Cap-and-Trade.

Much of what energized the left’s critique of Bush concerned his despotic record on war and civil liberties. Amerians from across the spectrum, in fact, came to see foreign policy as the most important issue in the 2006 mid-term elections. Many of us in the libertarian community hoped (not with blind optimisim, but at least we hoped) that Obama would indeed signal a decline in the neocon doctrines of preventive war, preventive detentions and eviscerations of the Bill of Rights in the name of national security. I will discuss his promises broken this Saturday in Monterey (details below).

Obama gave us some reason to hope, when his lips were moving. He said he opposed the Iraq war and wanted to get out. He said he’d restore habeas corpus. He said he’d oppose warrantless wiretapping. He promised a transparent government, on these and other questions.

Instead, only five months into his administration, he has betrayed more campaign promises this early in his term than any president in recent memory. He had gone beyond the Bush doctrine of circumventing the law to detain people without habeas corpus and has explicitly embraced the principle of “prolonged detention” – as in, indefinite detention. He has used state secrets and sovereign immunity privileges to cover up torture, wiretapping, and renditioning. He has stalled on Guantanamo and, in any event, indicated that even with Gitmo’s closure, he would maintain prison camps abroad, beyond the reach of U.S. law. He has issued abusive signing statements. He has expanded the war in Afghanistan, equivocated on Iraq, and bombed Pakistan, contributing to a humanitarian disaster there of unspeakable proportions.

As for transparency, aside from the state secrets nonsense, his domestic policy of expansive government at home has been done without anything remotely resembling the several days of public discussion he had vowed. Even on economics, many on the more intellectually honest left have conceded that he has continued and accelerated the corporatism of the Bush regime, robbing from all of us to bailout the biggest firms and interests.

There are other betrayals from a leftist perspective, on gay issues, health care and the like, all the while he has advanced corporate socialism at a staggering pace. He might destroy the dollar, while doing nothing to ratchet back the Bush state. Maybe only by destroying the dollar will he end the empire, inadvertently, but I daresay that’s not what Obama hopefuls had in mind.

Those in the Monterey, CA, area on Saturday can come see me discuss these and other issues. I’m speaking at 2PM, Saturday, June 20, at the Peace Resource Center at 1364 Fremont Blvd. in Seaside. It’s free to the public. For the rest of you, I hope to have an article version of my talk up at some point soon.

Jonah, my son, created a new YAL video with one of his two new YAL recruits. They had a blooper or two along the way, but decided to keep the bloopers in the video to hopefully appeal to kids in their age group. The direct link is here. Enjoy the video:

Why I can’t give up and why I won’t back down

If you’re familiar with my writings, you would know that I often include my son Jonah, an eleven year old junior member of Young Americans for Liberty (YAL).  At times, I do include my eight year old daughter Sarah Grace, who presently is upset with me because I have yet to sign her up for YAL.  I believe she has a little bit more time before she is mature enough to understand the complexities of the battles we face daily in our righteous fight for liberty.  There’s no doubt that she’s getting there, and will, just not yet.  Or so I thought.

Last night Sarah was trying to learn a hit song by Miley Cyrus called “The Climb.”  She first heard ‘The Climb’ at the recent Van Buren, AR Freedom Rally we attended.  The Van Buren Campaign for Liberty organizers, Jeremy and Elisha Barry’s daughter Kaila sang ‘The Climb’ over the karaoke system.  It’s a beautiful song and Kaila did an excellent job.  Anyway, as I sat in my little office space, I could hear Sarah singing in the other room, and when I walked in to check on her, she had youtube opened up and was reading the lyrics, or rather, singing the lyrics.  As I stood there in silence as not to disturb her, listened and watched, I could feel a tear stroll down my cheek.  My first thought was that my little baby is growing up.  With my voice cracking, I then asked her, “What do you like so much about the song?  She turned towards me and said in her pretty little girl voice, “I like it because it’s a little bit about you.”  I then proceeded to see just where this conversation would go and how she could imagine the song was a little about me.

She happened to point at the lyrics, specifically one section of the lyrics, that read “The struggles I’m facing, the chances I’m taking, sometimes might knock me down, but no I’m not breaking.” So I had to ask her, “How is this a little like me?”  Her reply, again, in her sweet little girl voice, was “You fight for liberty and it’s a struggle to wake people up, but you won’t give up because you love us.”  And there it is in plain black and white.  My eight year old baby girl just about summed up the whole reason for my fight for liberty in less than 25 words.  And she is one hundred percent right.  I will not give up, and I won’t back down.

I will continue the battle, no matter the cost, because if I do nothing, it would mean that I didn’t care enough about my children and their futures.  Like the founding fathers before us, our sacrifice may require more from each of us, such as more money, more time, and a stronger commitment for and to the cause.  We have to collect signatures against legislation that threatens our liberties whether we’re bone tired or not.  We have to stand up against bailouts and stimulus plans or our children will be chained slaves, far more controlled by a gargantuan government gone wild than we currently are.  The battle will not be won overnight, but we can’t expect it to be either.  Everyday will be a struggle because there will always be those in positions of power who want to control and rule we the people with an iron fist.  The battle is just beginning, and I’m in it to win it…for my children.

Anyway, here is the version of “The Climb” my daughter is trying to learn.

In this June 18th YouTube post, Peter Schiff gives a solid run through of how the Federal government's policies caused the current economic disaster, and why more regulation will only make an already grim situation much worse.

HR 1207 UPDATE!: Arkansas is 4 for 4

Throughout the state of Arkansas, we pounded our feet on the pavement in sometimes rainy or sweltering weather to gather signatures urging our four Congressmen to cosponsor HR 1207, The Federal Reserve Transparency Act.  Once we had collected enough signatures for that specific week, we then hand delivered the signed petitions to our Congressmen’s local offices (video links below).  All these actions were in addition to the electronic petition on Campaign for Liberty.  One by one our Congressmen became cosponsors of HR 1207, which I believe is a direct result of the patriot Campaign for Liberty individuals who cared enough to get involved. Our hard work and hands on dedication to the cause finally paid off because as of yesterday (June 23), the long time lone holdout, Congressman Vic Snyder, finally added his name to the cosponsor list.

That’s right, after several “Melt-the Phone” days, a couple thousand or so hand delivered signatures, and at least two sit down meetings with Congressman Snyder, he finally saw the light.  And I’m so proud of those C4L patriots in the second region who wouldn’t give up, who wouldn’t take no for an answer, and who gave it their all in seeing this through.  They could’ve given up at anytime, and some probably did.  However, those who didn’t give up on Snyder, people like our Region 2 Coordinator Rob Richard and Pulaski County Co-Coordinator Mark Phillips, make me so proud.

Soon, because of a pledge I made on my radio show (Patriot Pastor’s Radio), my hair will be buzzed, taken down to stubs similar to a five o’clock shadow.  My pledge was that if all four Arkansas Congressmen cosponsored HR 1207, I would permit my son (who helped me everyday collect signatures) to remove the hair from my head with the barber clippers.  This will most likely will take place at a C4L HR 1207 celebratory party event on or around July 7th.  I hear there will be champagne, cake, and ice cream.  Oh, and someone, please bring me a wig and a Klondike Bar.  I would prefer a 1980’s Jon Bon Jovi wig and a butter pecan Klondike...:-)

Conyers, by the way, is an influential Democrat who chairs the Judiciary Committee.  He is far-left and totally secure in his district seat.  That he is a co-sponsor proves that any Democrat will potentially co-sponsor this bill.

<!-- end head --> <!-- deck --> Become 'dangerous citizen' by 'repeating the very phrases Founding Fathers used'

By Bob Unruh

© 2009 WorldNetDaily-read at original source here

Just weeks after a scandal erupted over a Department of Homeland Security report that described as "right-wing extremists" those who oppose abortion and support secure national borders, another report is revealing that the Department of Defense is teaching that protesters are "low-level terrorists."

The newest action to define those who disagree with positions adopted by the government or administration of the United States was revealed by blogger Dennis Loo at Salon.com.

He cited a complaint filed by the northern California branch of the American Civil Liberties Union demanding that the Department of Defense change its instructions and those who have been given the training be told of the modifications by "sending out corrective materials."

According to the ACLU letter, the DoD's "Annual Level 1 Antiterrorism (AT) Awareness Training for 2009" tells department personnel "that certain First Amendment-protected activity may amount to 'low-level terrorism.'"

Specifically the training "Knowledge Check 1" asks, "Which of the following is an example of low-level terrorism activity?"

The multiple choices are: Attacking the Pentagon, IEDs, Hate crimes against racial groups and Protests.

The correct answer in the training course is "Protests."

According to Loo, the use of the term apparently is routine.

"I have just learned of a scholarly conference paper presented earlier this year that underscores the fact that the DoD training's use of 'low-level terrorism' is hardly an anomaly. 'Low level terrorism' is a term regularly being used by state security agencies," he wrote.

He cited a document at the February convention in New York titled "Labeling 'Low Level Terrorism': The Out-Definition of Social Movements."

Wrote a participant in the Salon forum page, "One of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our Founding Fathers used in their struggle for independence."

Said another, "Yep, when regular legally protected political protest is becoming classified by the powers-that-be, we know we have turned another corner into darkness. Perhaps this is the era the Great UN-enlightenment."

Blogger Jim Bovard added, "I still believe that we have not yet seen the tip of the iceberg of federal efforts to classify political protests or opposition to the government as terrorism."

Blogger Josh Richman at at the Costra Costa Times said, "I guess I'm surprised not only that the government hasn't yet learned its lesson about equating the exercise of our cherished constitutional rights with terrorism, but also that it's so incredibly obvious in doing so."

"Teaching employees
that dissent on issues of public concern is something to be feared, rather than encouraged, is a dangerously counterproductive use of scarce security resources, making us less safe as a democracy," the ACLU letter to the Pentagon said.

"DOD employees cannot accomplish their mission of protecting our nation and its values unless they understand that those values encompass the right to criticize our government through protest activities. It is imperative that they are taught the difference between political, religious or social activism and terrorism."

"Peaceful protest is not terrorist activity, it is protected by the First Amendment and is one of the cornerstones of our democratic society," the ACLU said. "The fact that the views espoused may be unpopular or may be critical of the government is hardly a reason to treat engaging in dissent as a suspect activity."

The earlier DHS report was "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment." WND has posted the report online for readers to see.

It also has prompted, as WND has reported, a lawsuit by Thomas More Law Center.

Law Center President Richard Thompson said the promise by DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to "reword" it truly is "scary because we know they are still going to maintain some kind of targeting for various people that she's never apologized to or never retracted [her accusations]."

The report linked returning veterans with the possibility of terrorism and when it was released and created such a furor for Napolitano she has given several explanations for it, including that she would have reworded the report and that it was issued by a rogue employee.

She later apologized to veterans for having linked them to terror.

But Thompson noted that the report also targeted as "potential terrorists" Americans who:

    * Oppose abortion

    * Oppose same-sex marriage

    * Oppose restrictions on firearms

    * Oppose lax immigration laws

    * Oppose the policies of President Obama regarding immigration, citizenship, and the expansion of social programs

    * Oppose continuation of free trade agreements

    * Are suspect of foreign regimes

    * Fear Communist regimes

    * Oppose a "one world" government

    * Bemoan the decline of U.S. stature in the world

    * Are upset with loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs
to China and India, and more

And Thompson told WND no apology has been offered to the members of any of those classes of citizens.

Thompson said as part of his preparation for the lawsuit, his organization has uncovered "additional information" that "creates even more concern that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is unconstitutionally targeting Americans merely because of their conservative beliefs."

Thompson said that information will be released in due course.

"Legalize the Constitution" bumper sticker

"This report was the tip of the iceberg," Thompson said at the time. "Conservative Americans should be very outraged."

The Thomas More Law Center filed its lawsuit against Napolitano and the DHS on behalf of nationally syndicated conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage, Gregg Cunningham of the pro-life organization Center for Bio-Ethical Reform Inc. and Iraqi War Marine veteran Kevin Murray.

It alleges the federal agency violated the First and Fifth Amendment constitutional rights of these three plaintiffs by targeting them for disfavored treatment and chilling their free speech, expressive association, and equal protection rights. The lawsuit further claims that DHS encourages law enforcement officers throughout the nation to target and report citizens to federal officials as suspicious rightwing extremists and potential terrorists because of their political beliefs.

It was June 13, 2008 when Ron Paul announced the formation of the Campaign For Liberty.

And look how far we've come since then.  Other political organizations only dream of reaching over 100,000 members in their first year.  Putting on one conference a year is a major production for any political organization.  We've already had three and we're less than a month from a fourth.  Our first major federal legislative initiative already has the co-sponsorship of more than half the House of Representatives.  And we're already in the process of setting up state partner organizations.

Looks like we're going to have a Revolution after all.  Certainly we're running at an excellent pace.

You guys are the greatest.  Let's make the next year even more exciting than the last.

As you've no doubt heard by now, Ron Paul's Audit the Fed Bill (H.R. 1207) has now passed 218 cosponsors, giving this vital reform the support of a majority on the U.S. House.

That's the good news. But here's the rest of the story.

I've seen a lot of well-intentioned news stories and posts over the last 24 hours incorrectly noting that this means it is out of Committee, on the House floor, or worse, assured of passage.

Please note that none of this is true - yet.

There is still MUCH work to be done, even in the House. You and I both know that the Fed and its allies will stop at nothing to hold onto their power. And there are a lot of tricks people can use even at this stage of the battle.

So please know - there's a long way to go, but thanks to you, we're getting closer every day to passing Audit the Fed!

The next step is hearings and a vote in the House Financial Services Committee. This has not been scheduled yet. After that the House can consider the bill.

We're optimistic with its bipartisan support in the House, that the Audit the Fed bill will proceed through Committee and to the House floor in the near future. And rest assured, Campaign for Liberty and Ron Paul are prepared to keep up the pressure - and use any available means - to pass Audit the Fed through the House.

More on this in the future, but for now, KEEP
